Hua Hin to Sterilize 1200 Macaques
HUA HIN — Hua Hin city will spend 1.2 million baht to sterilize 1,200 macaque monkeys in a bid to control their growing population.
Macaques at Khao Takiab, a mountain along the famous sea resort area of Hua Hin in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, are popular with tourists, who often feed and take photos with them.
The city of Hua Hin said the population of 3,000 macaques is too large, adding that they’re causing chaos in nearby communities.

Wish they'd do the same down here at PKK municipality. As too many, and getting a bit too aggressive.
If down this way, keep your distance, and don't have anything in your hands, especially food or any type of plastic bag. When they DO attack, simply drop whatever you have.

Well overdue, I avoid taking visitors to Khao Takiab or anywhere similar. Nasty creatures best left in their own habitat. Like stray dogs and rabies jabs, an overdue reaction to a problem that has been there for a long time. I feel sympathy for the people doing the sterilizing, If it involves catching them I hope they are well protected.

Fresh news?..... No. This was stated in June/July 2017 !!!!!Because of their mischievous nature, the Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department and Department of Livestock Development have decided to sterilize the monkeys and install containment cages in the areas being taken over by the monkeys. The Livestock Development Department will be responsible for sterilizing them and feeding them daily.
And back then the figure was 2,000 monkeys to be sterilised.

More Hua Hin macaques to be sterilised

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: The Hua Hin municipality is sterilising even more macaques as their population has grown to about 3,000 despite past desexing efforts.
Hua Hin mayor Nopporn Wuthikul said on Monday that the population of macaques was soaring and. Their numbers exceeded 3,000 in Ban Khao Takiab village and Suan Ling community and they had long troubled local residents and tourists.
The Hua Hin municipality has sterilised about 600 local macaques since 2017 but their birth rate remains high, he said.
"So this year we join forces with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation to sterilise 1,200 more macaques, both male and female," Mr Nopporn said.
The Hua Hin municipality paid for the sterilisation, which costs about 1,000 baht each, while the department's officials handled the operation, he said.

Let's see if they're true to their word this time!
Re: Hua Hin to Sterilize 1200 Macaques
Unless its an ongoing initiative, it will be a pointless initiative. Just sterilizing 40% means 60% remain fertile. How long before the benefits are eroded?

Re: Hua Hin to Sterilize 1200 Macaques
Even if it's not ongoing, that 40% would have been multiplying. And multiplying again...and again. So it's a huge number they are potentially eradicating.
I understand what you are saying but in 15 years or so, 'wash, rinse and repeat' (edit: exactly what your point was - sorry ).
You don't want to wipe out the whole population.

No, we don't want to wipe out the entire population, but it can't be more than 2 years ago (may be 1) that they trapped and relocated loads of them. I've no idea how fast they reproduce, but the reduced number soon became unmanageable again. I think your 15 years could be optimistic.
[Edit] My friend Google tells me the relocation was July 2017.

Just edited my post as I missed your point a little. I realised I was just reinforcing what you said, albeit a different time scale.Big Boy wrote: ↑Mon Jan 21, 2019 5:16 pm No, we don't want to wipe out the entire population, but it can't be more than 2 years ago (may be 1) that they trapped and relocated loads of them. I would imagine that tranquilizer darts will be used. A pickup truck arrived in our small soi not too long ago to remove some of the dogs, and while some were simply caught and caged, others were sent off to dreamland for a short while. I'm not sure what drug is used, but it worked very quickly and I was told it only knocks them out for a relatively brief spell.
Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact
Re: Hua Hin to Sterilize 1200 Macaques
The tranquilizer darts method sounds the best. I could do with them to come round when it is time to do the annual rabies jab for my dogs.
Re: Hua Hin to Sterilize 1200 Macaques
They need to do the same to the dogs.
Re: Hua Hin to Sterilize 1200 Macaques
They definitely need a needle, one they can't awake from when compared to the little moon faced monkeys and Gibbons these damn things are a pest and do little for the environment.

Only 1200, I am sure there are more still not sterilized.
