I've built myself a hobby shop. I'm thinking of making toys to give to orphans.
Thing is, I have no idea what they would like.
I do work in metal and wood.

That's really a commendable idea. 
I hope people have some ideas and advice.
I would think most orphans would be very happy with anything, but you can't go to a place with just a few or there will be sad, disappointed faces. That to me means it has to be simple, safe and able to be quickly produced.
Target age range(s) also has to be a consideration. I need to think more..... Pete
