They have always moved around, usually young males looking for a territory. The furthest north I have seen one was before covid on the sea wall of the Sheraton hotel, before being chased away by security.

I'm a bit surprised they don't get fried (literally!) by using the power lines as their highway. I actually saw a pigeon get fried not too long ago, warmed my cockles, it did..

You're right! Nearer than I realised. Still a suprise to see one by that junction though.

More and more are being spotted around Big C at the moment.
Maybe coming down from the hills behind?

I was absolutely mobbed by them once on that golf course(Royal Hua Hin). It on was the par 3 14th hole at the very far end of the course, furthest up the mountain.

One minute there was nothing next there's 100+ of them. Don't mind admitting their presence made me quite uncomfortable.

Especially as I 3 putted from 20 feet and they were all laughing at me! ImageImage

I head there are some between Soi 88 and Soi 94 inland side of the railway. I heard several had entered a hotel room in Seamira House Hotel and basically had a party with the occupants food and drink while they were out.

It could happen anywhere - they are just looking for food. People will soon learn to close doors and windows.

Hua Hin sterilising 300 monkeys

Local authorities in Hua Hin plan to sterilise 300 monkeys before the end of this month in an attempt to control the population and avoid impacts on local communities.

The municipality has set aside a budget of 580,000 baht for the sterilisation programme targeting 300 monkeys living near Hin Lek Fai and Hua Hin golf course, said Bussaba Chokesuchart, deputy mayor of the resort town in Prachuap Khiri Khan.

The programme is being carried out by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) until Sept 24, with Wat Bussayabanphot serving as an administrative centre.

Ms Bussaba said that about 100 monkeys had been caught in the past week and it turned out that many had already been sterilised. The DNP team is expected to target monkeys living near Khao Takiab, a popular tourist area in the south end of the town, next.

According to Ms Bussaba, the sterilisation programme was first initiated in 2017 to reduce the monkey population and mitigate their negative impacts on local residents and tourists.

She said thousands of monkeys have been sterilised since the programme started. It is believed to be the most effective solution to ensure that local residents will be able to coexist harmoniously with the animals, she added.

When I was there a couple of months ago, there seemed to be a lot more on the road coming down the North side of the Hin Lek Fai lookout road. There has always been monkeys around there but I'd never seen that many before.

I pass there quite regularly through the week. The numbers fluctuate depending on the time of day. There can be hordes of them to almost none within a couple of hours.

So the sterilisation programme seems to have been successful :duck:

I don't want to drive this thread off topic, and I don't think the issue warrants a separate thread in "Health". All I suggest is that you read it when time.

Prototype enclosure tames unruly macaques

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... y-macaques

PHETCHABURI: The Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation (DNP) recently observed a prototype method aimed at helping manage macaques nationwide.

Department officials including director-general Atthaphon Charoenchansa recently visited Khao Wang, a famous mountain in Phetchaburi, to view the prototype enclosure at the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) in Tha Yang district in the province.

Along the top of the walls of the 200-square-metre enclosure, low-voltage cables and 1.5-metre-wide aluminium plates have been installed to prevent the monkeys from escaping.

This method had been used to manage monkey populations for at least a decade and was used for the prototype, said Yuthapol Angkinan, an adviser to the department.

He said the enclosure was built to provide housing for resident macaques on the mountain, where they are known for annoying area residents and tourists.

The system was developed after Phetchaburi governor Nattachai Nampoonsuksan urged that Kao Wang macaques be removed from the protected wildlife list, not only because of their unruly behaviour but also for their own safety as their population is expanding outside their usual area.

Mr Yuthapol said the prototype enclosure would be developed further into a new unit to be installed at the 300-rai Huai Sai Wildlife Breeding Station in Cha-am district of Phetchaburi.

The DNP had considered using an area on Koh Leum in Prachuap Khiri Khan for the project. However, the Royal Thai Army, which owns the island, denied the request as it is used only for security missions.

At least 300 monkeys are expected to live in the cage at the breeding station at first, said Mr Yuthapol. State agencies will sign a memorandum of understanding with WFFT chairman Edwin Wiek to construct the enclosure. The model should help with the problem of the fast-growing macaque population nationwide.

Mr Yuthapol said the department would also work on another monkey management project in Phetchaburi with financial support from provincial authorities.
