Netflix and VPN issues

Post by Tunafish »

I am considering subscribing to a streaming provider, and obviously Netflix comes to mind.
I maybe wrong, but from I see, the offerings of Netflix to users in Thailand come from Netflix Singapore.
The alternative is to use a VPN and subscribe to Netflix US.
Is there a content difference between the two?
How much content is in 4k?
Or is Netflix the best choice of streaming providers?

I would much appreciate anyone who can experiences on this subject.

Thnx, Tunafish

I tried Netflix Thailand when they had a free one month trial. Only half the content the U.S version has. Not worth it to me. Netflix can recognize VPNs and block you.

I've not had this experience. I'm constantly travelling and use Netflix extensively (and also my "downloads" when the Internet is unavailable!). There are vast differences in what Netflix offers/shows in different regions, however, I've not had any issues in accessing UK/US "offerings" through the use of a VPN ("CyberGhost" in my case) - though, that said IMHO there are numerous options on Netflix wherever you may be.

I also use Amazon Prime (a bonus from the LHG's shopping & selling!), but Netflix is far better....... I also have something like 6TB worth of movies and shows on Disc  .. hey, I travel!

I’ve used Netflix since it first became available in Thailand with almost no issues. I’ve never noticed any difference between content offerings here versus the US. While traveling last year it even worked fine in Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, but the internet provider in Indonesia blocks Netflix ( google research indicates this is a corporate decision, not an Indonesian law ). I’ve tried using it via VPN but Netflix detects the VPN and blocks access with a warning message that using the service via VPN is not allowed. Just finished binge watching 3 seasons of “Billions”, highly recommended, especially if you liked Homeland !

I've also had the VPN blocking issue - it just wont stream when the VPN is activated.

Plenty of US and UK based series to watch but not a great deal else, no live sports or news. Nothing in 4k that I have seen.

Many thanks for your replies, based upon which, I will open a subscription.
Regarding VPN's, I recently had a terrible experience with Nordvpn.
When I switched this VPN on, the down speed went from 200Mb to less than 1Mb!
Noord were very helpful, but none of their suggestions were able to improve the issue.
But they promptly issued me a total refund.

I've no idea what Netflix costs, or even what it shows. However, have you looked at what AIS Play can offer? It is very cheap, and has loads of box sets, movies etc on demand. Netflix is just another option on the service.

I don't use it for much more than Sky News, and the occasional documentary, but my daughter-in-law thinks it's fantastic. Before subscribing to Netflix, I would suggest at least a quick look at what AIS Play has to offer. In fact, I'd be interested to know how they compare.

I can't see anything online, but this gives an idea of what they offer https://aisplay.ais.co.th/portal/. Programmes are offered in Thai or English where appropriate.

May not be easy from your location, but I just walked into an AIS store and discussed it with them.

Netflix Fail

Post by Ratsima »

Last night we were about to watch a show on Netflix, but got a notice that it had been detected that we were using a proxy or VPN. we were not. We have been using Netflix from this location for a year or so. We successfully watched several programs yesterday afternoon via Netflix on our Apple TV.

I contacted Netflix via their online chat and was told that they couldn’t do anything about it and that I had to contact my ISP (CAT) and ask them why my IP appeared to be from a VPN/proxy. Then they told me to check WhatIsMyIP. I did with these results:

Your Public IPv4 is: 110.78.152.141
Your IPv6 is: Not Detected
Location: Bangkok, 10 TH
ISP: CAT Telecom Public Company Ltd

Clearly, nothing unusual here.

It took a half hour of wrangling, but they finally opened a ticket. But, no result yet. We’re still blocked.

Anyone else ever experienced this?

Any ideas?

Or, should I just go back to watching TV via other means?

Thai ISP IP addresses often get blacklisted around the world for various reasons, CAT and 3BB are the worst. That's one of the reasons for using a VPN, but of course it doesn't work with Netflix!

I would try with a mobile 4G provider or ask CAT to give you a different IP.

A neighbour had a similar problem a while ago.

The explanation went something like this:
- Netflix may have updated itself (via Google Play?) to a version not compatible with your device.
- Delete your Netflix app, go to Google Chrome and install an old version of Netflix app (lots of versions available).

It works with cellular data, but that could get expensive. Plus, kind of awkward, but doable, with an Apple TV.

I’m in a condo, so it’s the condo who is the CAT subscriber. I don’t think CAT will give the entire condo a new IP address based on my request.

Plus, I got a new IP at 2:00 AM last night (yes, I keep track), but that didn’t help.

Ok, at least you know the culprit is definitely CAT then.
