Moving on:

Buffalo Bill's (Also has a sign saying Ye Olde Buffalo Tavern)

Location: On the corner of the fishing pier road and Soi 55, also known as Naresdamri Rd and Chomsin Rd

I struggle to remember just how Ye Olde this place is, but it's certainly been around for a fair length of time. It's a restaurant cum bar cum occasional live music venue.

Somewhat detached from the other venues in the fishing pier road, it's a spacious tranquil place, with background music at a very low volume.

The seating is comfortable, it has a number of TV screens showing various sports (although none of them very big) and it also has a selection of newspapers.

As the name suggests, it offers Australian steaks on the menu as well as English favourites and some lighter snacks.

Beer prices are very reasonable for this road, my large Leo's costing 100 each, but the food prices are pretty much at the same high level as most of the other outlets in the fishing pier road.

A great venue to relax and meet someone for a chat, or just enjoy a few beers.
Haha! And what's more I reckon I've only ever been in two of those 12 shops and once only!

It was an educated guess based on my bar knowledge

I've been in more than one bar that's for sure, but certainly not all of them not by a long way.

What to tip? Thai tipping is generally at a token level, but the Italians tend to tip like the Americans.
Much as I love to read about your mooch about town (it’s bringing back some happy memories) I take issue with this. After five years’ living and working in Italy—Milan—my experience with Italians is that they are not a tipping race. I have been chased after by a barman when I left money for him in a small town called Gallarate, just north west of Milan, near Malpensa airport, as he thought I had made a mistake. This was in 2010, shortly after I’d arrived in Italy and a short time later, by unrelated happenstance, I rented my apartment a stone’s throw from his establishment and never dared make the same mistake.

Times may have changed in Italy, many things did, and I’ll wager the Italians at your chosen eatery have been conditioned by tourists who are only too happy to spoil them. But this is similar to your musings on the behaviour of ‘animals in the wild’ compared with ‘animals in the zoo’ (my own poetic license) and Italians in Italy do not tip.

Nobody has the largesse of our American cousins.

But in the US restaurants are permitted to pay wait staff less than minimal wage, because they recieve tips, this gives way to the tipping culture. I think the % thing is wrong. If I go to a really good place for b'fast my tip is usually obout 20% but if I take the family for dinner for 4 I tip 10% max.

Got into an interesting discussion last night with a restaurant owner in town.

He told me of 2 incidents yesterday.

-A largish group had a 3000 baht bill and left a tip of 10 baht!

-Another individual had a bill of 300 baht and left 5 baht tip.

I explained that for a long time I've held the view that tipping is private and entirely up to the individual. I don't like it if people say "oh youre giving too much or too little" I really want to tell them to mind their own business!

But at the risk of completely contradicting what I've just said(Image) I also believe that if you're going to tip then there's a certain 'minimum' tip in each situation and in the above two cases the tip left was an insult!(it was certainly taken as one by the staff)

The owner said they would have been happier to have received no tip at all.... far far happier. He was genuinely angry about it.

It's an interesting topic and like I say I have contradicted myself!

I certainly agree with what has been said - if the service/food was bad then no tip, but if all was ok then 20-40 Baht for the 300 Baht meal and 1-200 minimum for the 3000 Baht meal

Interesting - My experience of Italian tipping is confined to expatriate Italians, who have shown great generosity in restaurants. Over the years I have twice planned to visit Italy and twice had to cancel - I don't think I've even flown over it..

No Name bar

Location: South side of Selakam, next door to Buckleys

This bar flies the flag of Denmark and the clientele almost exclusively speak the Nordic languages (which I find impossible to tell apart)

Why No Name? Was someone so bereft of ideas they came up with that.. - or does the English pronunciation mean something amusing in Danish?

This tiny bar has been around for a good many years before expanding to swallow up the neighbouring Caddy Shack bar, which was equally small.

The conversion has been very basic, little more than the removal of the partition wall - Caddy Shack's bar is still in situ, with what looks like a disused stove lurking behind. Caddy shack's perfect floor tiling also highlights the incompetence of whoever tiled No Name - clearly without a spirit level..

Seating is decent, although the swivel captain's chairs at the bar are not as comfortable as they look. A small Leo at 7pm cost me 80.

Good little venue for a Nordic natter, but not a lot else.

Suphatson massage

Location: North end of Poonsuk Rd, past the dogleg with Dechanuchit, about 100m on the right walking from Dechanuchit

This little shop caught my attention for advertising an oil massage for 250, instead of the ubiquitous 300.

Inside I was offered a shower and shown to a reasonably spacious cubicle

Pleasant enough masseuse from Issan, mid twenties, but no special massage skills..

..and no great interest in just giving a massage either.. 8)

There are still some respectable massage shops in Poonsuk Rd - but not many..

This bar with this name exist since more than 15 years. First opened by a Thai lady, later a German sponsor and now a Danish sponsor with his Thai wife. Never changed the name and most customers Danish and other Scandinavians as the English of the Danish sponsor is very poor.

They own the hotel directly opposite and down a tiny Soi which i can't remember the name of, nor her name so perhaps the bar is appropriately named!

Not sure if i can 'reccomend' as such on here....??

But choosing my words carefully..... If you care to wander on a little further go down Nebkaeheardt and take a left on 53, wander up there and about 100 yards before the kink in the road is a little solo massage place run by [Mod Edit] no names please, next to a Tailors shop

Maybe a review of that place would be good especially as you enjoy straight massage. She has a sign up offering a 'no sex special'!!

Also, before you get to her shop just before on the left( where there is a laundry shop on corner) wander down there, first on the left is [Mod Edit] no names please and whilst I've not been I here she's very good but a review would be good to see. Again, no nonsense!

Happy Treatments
