It's getting worse in Korat. The above hospital was being evacuated per an earlier story, but perhaps has now stopped?

Flood-hit residents in Korat evacuated

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -evacuated

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: Soldiers were despatched to evacuate flood-hit residents in Muang district after Lam Takhong overflowed, flooding communities and Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital.

Many areas in Muang district were flooded after days of heavy rain.

Two communities along Mittraphap and Samrong Chan roads were badly hit by the swelling Lam Takhong canal. Community roads were inaccessible for small vehicles.

Soldiers from Wing 1 and two military lorries were sent to help evacuate 212 affected residents in the two communities on Thursday. As of Thursday morning, 45 households were evacuated.

Floodwater at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima, the largest hospital in this northeastern province, receded by 20cm on Thursday. However, the road to the hospital was impassable for small vehicles.

The hospital was flooded early Wednesday morning after the Lam Takhong canal overflowed.

The provincial irrigation office installed more pumps to accelerate drainage from the Lam Takhong canal to 1,000 cubic metres per hour.

Although floodwater receded, some road sections remained unusable, particularly in front of Maharat Makhon Ratchasima Hospital, where the water level was 70cm high.

The provincial administration organisation has accelerated its work to build temporary elevated walkways from all gates to hospital buildings.

Soldiers from the Army Circle 21 and rescue workers were sent to help hospital staff and patients.

The Bangkok Post keeps referring to the river that overflowed as the Lam Takhong "canal". It is not a canal, it is a natural waterway. I suspect the confusion arises due to the ambiguity of the Thai word คลอง, which can either refer to a canal (man-made waterway) or a natural stream.

Here Google Maps shows it as คลองดะคอง (Klong Takhong) in Thai and Takhong in English.

Big storms prompt dam discharges

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... discharges

Some major dams have been told to discharge water to make room for heavy rain expected from an upcoming storm this week, according to the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR).

The ONWR and the Thai Meteorological Department are keeping watch on a storm brewing from a low-pressure front.

If it develops into a tropical storm, it is expected to unleash heavy rain in parts of the country from Oct 29-31, said the ONWR deputy spokesman Thanaroj Woraratprasert.

It would be the seventh storm to hit the country this rainy season. The previous storm, Kompasu, drenched much of the Northeast after making landfall in Vietnam in the middle of this month.

With the latest storm alert, the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) has been asked to release some water from large dams in preparation for the forecast downpours, he said.

Rainfall has generally increased throughout the country, Mr Thanaroj said.

The rainy season is predicted to wind down this month or early next month.

Water in dams and reservoirs nationwide stand at a combined 59,920 million cubic metres, with 17 dams and reservoirs 80% above-capacity. They are being closely monitored.

The ONWR's advance team was out inspecting the water situation in the Tha Chin River through which floodwater was being emptied into the sea.

To alleviate the effects of floods, the RID is diverting excess water from the river to the large Pho Phraya field covering U Thong and Muang district of Suphan Buri, which has been set aside as a water catchment area.

Also, discharges from the Pasak Joasid dam in Lop Buri were being carefully regulated to minimise flooding on downstream residents.

At present, floods remain in 15 provinces: Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Maha Sarakham, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Si Sa Ket, Lop Buri, Sing Buri, Suphan Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Prachin Buri and Sa Kaeo.

According to the ONWR, floods triggered by the overflowing Chao Phraya River, which receives water from the North, have shown sign of easing in the next few days.

Dams discharging water ahead of storm

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... d-of-storm

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: More water is being released from four major dams in Nakhon Ratchasima province ahead of a forecast storm, with the reservoirs already full.

Nakhon Ratchasima governor Vichien Chantaranothai said on Tuesday a major storm expected at the end of this week would send a huge volume of runoff into the dam reservoirs. Water was being discharged to make room for it.

The latest weather forecast warns that an active low-pressure cell over the middle South China Sea will likely intensify, make landfall over lower Vietnam and cover Cambodia from Oct 27-29, leading to increasing rain in upper Thailand.

Mr Vichien said the recent flooding was receding, with life in many inundated districts returning to normal. Some flooding remained in areas of Muang district and work crews were draining it off into natural waterways .

Overflow from the Lam Chiang Krai river was still affecting Non Sung district, while water from Lam Takhong and Lam Mun rivers flowed into Phimai district, Mr Vichien said.

The flooding in Phimai was stable with only riverside and low-lying areas still heavily inundated.

The Lam Takhong reservoir had been discharging 800,000-900,000 cubic metres of water a day since Monday. The water was expected to arrive at Lalom Mor drainage gate in tambon Khok Khruad of Muang district on Wednesday evening, before passing through Non Sung and Chalerm Phrakiart districts.

Water was expected to reach downtown Phimai next week, the governor said.

Water was being discharged from four large dams and also middle-sized dams, as their reservoirs were full.

He predicted fresh flooding in previously flood-hit areas along the Lam Takhong and Lam Chiang Krai rivers. Phimai district would also see more flooding but it would not be as severe as last time.

As of Tuesday, Lam Takhong dam in Si Khiu district was holding 332 million cubic metres of water, or 105.54% of its design capacity of 314 million cu/m. About 800,000 cu/m of water was being discharged from the dam each day.

Lam Phra Phloeng dam in Pak Thong Chai district had 153 million cu/m of water, or 98.92% of its capacity of 155 million cu/m. About 2.19 million cu/m was being discharged each day.

Lam Mun Bon dam in Khon Buri district was holding 145 million cu/m, or 103% of its design capacity of 141 million cu/m. About 1.41 million cu/m of water was being discharged each day.

Lam Sae dam in Khon Buri district had 271 million cu/m of water, or 98.54% of its capacity of 275 million cu/m.. About 2.06 million cu/m of water was being discharged daily.

Chao Phraya overflows during high tide

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -high-tide

The Chao Phraya River overflowed into parts of Bangkok and Samut Prakan province on Monday morning during high tide.

Local authorities reported pavement-deep flooding in Bangkok's Bangkok Noi, Taling Chan, Bang Khunthian and Nong Chok districts and Samut Prakan's Muang district.

The Hydrographic Department of the navy reported that Chao Phraya River level peaked in front of the Royal Thai Navy headquarters at 2.16 metres above mean sea level at 9.55am. It predicted the next peak at 2.23 metres above the mean sea level at 11.26am on Tuesday.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said that discharges from the Chao Phraya dam upstream had nothing to do with the flooding.

Meanwhile, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that flooding remained in parts of Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Maha Sarakham, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Ratchasima, Lop Buri, Suphan Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani and Nakhon Pathom provinces.

Alert: There was breaking news at 1545 hours that the Phetchaburi River would overflow and flood their Muang district at 1600 hours, and people should move their possessions to higher ground. No idea if it is in progress as I type, and there is no full story yet. It sounds like a flash flood situation :(

We had a brown trousers moment down in Bangsaphan earlier this week when the new flood defenses were tested to their limits.

They seem to have learnt from previous mistakes - not releasing the reservoir water at high tide.

Not sure if this is viewable for the Fayboo fans ...

Major flooding is being reported on Thai news channels today in Chumphon, Ranong, Surat, and NST though there is very little in the English language news rags - most footage from Fayboo. Been pissing solidly for 4 days where we are.

The below is showing it quite well also, and updates periodically. It looks like it was trying to develop an eye.
