British Bacon

Post by PeteC »

The different types really confuses me. Below is an example of what I see available where I live. Besides the obvious of "Smoked" "Unsmoked", what is considered the most tasty? Which one would crisp up the best?

This will no doubt get a mixture of responses - I’ve always been a “smoked” bacon advocate, but I’m sure the split will be close to 50:50. As to the cut, it depends on what I’m eating it with - back if it’s a typical full English breakfast but streaky is good for adding to other dishes e.g. cut up and added to a Lasagne. Streaky will usually crisp up more, simply because it has a higher fat content and is normally cut thinner.

Back bacon seems to be the most popular. I find lean back is better for sandwiches and as part of a 'full English'. Streaky will crisp better than other cuts and is the best choice for 'pigs in blankets'. I often crisp up a plate of streaky to eat as a finger snack.
As a main part of the meal, you can't beat gammon, which technically is not bacon because it comes from the leg but is cured in the same way as bacon.

Streaky, smoked or unsmoked, for a crispy (crunchy) bacon roll for brekky

By choice, I would have middle cut for a full English

Healthiest is lean back bacon

Steaky to add to casseroles or stews
