I've read that as well but never tried it. For example:

The above instructions say "Chinese Phone" but it's​ probably the same for this international version we get in Thailand. There's other methods out there as well. By the way, the tablet has Android /EMUI 11.

I access all the Google services through the browser and make shortcuts for the couple I use most often (Gmail, Drive). One can create web apps as well. This is the simplest method.

For other apps one might find on the play store, I use the Aurora store. I try to favor the free and open source apps on f-droid. I never used the Huawei app gallery but understand it provides access to a lot of apps.
