Not sure they've figured out that increasing the minimum wage increases the costs of everything else to everybody else so nobody really has any extra moolah in their pockets. But at least the central bank can keep printing money while inflation rampages on.

Provincial breakdown within the article. In my mind it's still slave wages, but perhaps we need to stop thinking about Thai Multinational profits, and consider normal small company revenue here.

Daily minimum wage to rise by 5% from Oct 1

That is going to disappoint a lot of people. I think many were expecting a lot more.

It would take twice that amount to make a real difference in anyone's life.

Be careful what you wish for. Every increase gets them closer to where they would qualify to actually pay income tax. Unless, of course, they also modify the tax structure to take those increases into account.

So what is the Income Tax threshold for Thais? I always thought it was well over the minimum wage.

The minimum assessable income per annum to qualify for income tax payment is 150,000 baht per annum. If said worker gets say 420 baht per day and works 30 days per month that could put you in the system.
The problem comes once you're in the system...

Western workweek of 8hr X 5 days X 420 = 873,600
Thai workweek of 10hrs X 6 days X 420 = 1,310,400

Don't think they have much to worry about.

Minimum Wage Rises

Post by Big Boy »

Hmmmm....... This isn't the type of number being quoted during elections. Surely prospective politicians weren't lying.

Prachuap Khiri Khan minimum wage raises from 335 to 345฿/day.

Here is the breakdown by province, the biggest jump and highest wages are in Phuket, and the lowest and smallest rise was in the three southernmost provinces.

PM Srettha Thavisin said he disagrees with the minimum daily wage hike of just two baht (or less than one percent) in the three southernmost provinces of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat from 328 to 330 baht announced by the Labour Ministery on Friday as one cannot even buy one egg with two baht and said it needs to be reviewed. Srettha said the ruling Pheu Thai Party pledge is to significantly increase the minimum wage and the ministry's announcement for all the provinces must be rediscussed.

The Labour Ministry on Fri announced new minimum wages effective Jan 1. Phuket saw the highest increase of 16 bt to 370 baht, followed by Bangkok & surrounding provinces including Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, and Samut Prakarn with a 10 baht increase, or 3% rise, to 363 baht per day.
The three provinces in the deep south, Yala, Narathiwat, and Pattani see the lowest increase as well as the lowest minimum wage, an increase of just two baht to 330 baht daily.

Who actually polices payment of minimum wage. I've seen all of the minimum wage for 10 provinces raising to 400฿/day propaganda. However, I still see advertisement after advertisement on Social Media offering jobs in Hua Hin for between 300 and 350฿/day. How do they get away with it?

I think the minimum wage increase is currently scheduled as a Labour Day (1 May) "gift" from the government.

No wage hike on Labour Day

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... labour-day

The government will not raise the minimum daily wage to 400 baht on Labour Day as previously announced. Instead, it will wait for the results of a tripartite committee on May 14................
