Mandatory insurance for older foreigners

Post by HarryVardon »

I have lived in Thailand for quite a while, for the last few years without health insurance. Later this year I need to go back to Europe for 2 or 3 weeks. In order to get back into Thailand when I return, I will need a “Thailand Pass”. In order to get one, I need medical insurance in Thailand. I would be quite happy to take out and insurance, but I am over 75 years old and take the usual pills that people of my age take. This means that no company will insure me. As soon as I fill in an on-line form its starts flashing when I enter my age and I cannot get a quote. No insurance, no Thailand Pass! I also fear that immigration in Thailand will soon require to see insurance when renewing a yearly visa. If I can’t get a visa then I will be forced to leave Thailand permanently which I do not want to do. Has anybody any suggestions as to how this problem can be solved?

It's a big problem at present, and no tell how it may change (for the better) in coming months. There is an article posted somewhere in the Covid files about allowing older people to self insure, and they gave perhaps 3-4 options on how to do it. The Gov is discussing but no clue when we'll see results or more articles. I'll keep my eyes open.

Could try this, unless over 99.

There are quite a few of these "Thailand Pass" insurance schemes. All of them state that they should not be used by people already living in Thailand. The other problem is that they all have to have an end date and nobody is sure what immigration will accept here, 2 weeks?, expiry date of visa?, 1 year?, or will they just say that this type of insurance may not be used?

I was told by Matt at AA insurance that they will accept 3 months cover.
