Family Mart now Tops Daily
Family Mart now Tops Daily
Has anyone noticed that almost overnight the Family Mart shops are now rebranded as 'Tops Daily'.
Both companies are owned by Central Food Retail so no change of ownership. I guess it could be classed as a relaunch.
I'm sure most people will think it's a change of ownership, but it's not.

Re: Family Mart now Tops Daily
Ah. That explains the Tops Daily I saw somewhere. Our local Family Mart vacated its premises last year.
Isn't Family Mart a Japanese franchise?

Family Mart is 100% owned by Central Retail Foods.
CRC has partnered with Japan FamilyMart Co (JFM) since 2012, with its subsidiary SFM Holdings holding a 50.65% stake and Robinson Plc (RBS) holding 0.35% stake in Central Family Mart Ltd (CFM), the local operator of the FamilyMart chain in Thailand.
Yesterday's acquisition saw CRC acquire the remaining 49%, or 5,757,500 shares from the Japanese partner -- making it the sole owner of FamilyMart's operation in Thailand.

The one near me is still Family Mart but I noticed the one virtually opposite Market Village changed to Tops a couple of weeks ago.

Japan's FamilyMart exits Thailand as 7-Eleven's dominance grows
Japanese convenience store chain FamilyMart will withdraw from Thailand after its franchise agreement with local retailer Central Group ended in late May, opening the door for rival 7-Eleven to tighten its grip on the market.
The company announced the withdrawal on Thursday. Its roughly 200 stores in the Southeast Asian country will be converted to the Tops Daily brand, a Central Group-owned small supermarket chain, over the rest of the year.

Central Retail Corporation Plc (CRC) plans to fully rebrand its "Family Mart" convenience stores as "Tops Daily" within this year after starting to gradually make the shift in August last year.
The franchise rights for Family Mart in Thailand will expire at the end of this year, according to Maytinee Phisutsinthop, chief operating officer of Central Food Retail Co Ltd.
The move is in response to the current trend of other convenience store operators replacing typical small convenience stores with an area of 150 square metre with larger stores, offering a parking space and dining area and wider variety of services to the consumers. The concept is similar to 7-Eleven convenience stores, which have shifted to investing in large-scale outlets during the past 10 years, Maytinee said.
Consumer trends and behaviour today focus more on convenience, proximity, presentation, value, and a wide range of offerings and services. Small retail stores must quickly adapt and develop new models to fulfil customer needs and introduce a wider array of services in order to make shopping experience at smaller stores feel similar to visiting a supermarket, Maytinee said.
Retail experts believe that Central Retail's decision to rebrand "Family Mart" as "Tops Daily" indicates that the Tops Daily brand is still strong in the market and has access to customers.
I think it's not so much Japan withdrawing than a decision not to negotiate a new franchise deal with CRC who own 100% of the existing franchise in Thailand.

Has anyone been in one yet? Are they any different to the old Family Mart or is it just another 7-Eleven copycat?

Re: Family Mart now Tops Daily
This rebranding is a reversal of what was. Family Mart stores were originally 'Tops Daily' and was rebranded to Family Mart. Now CRC are polarising all of their retail food outlets under the Tops brand.
Other news stories claim that it was CRC that dropped any notion of renewing the contract with Japan.
The Thais, apparently, relate more to the TOPS brand than Family Mart due to it's history.
CRC is the largest supermarket chain in Thailand and now operates solely under TOPS having changed the name of their outlets including food halls.

Unless you have a serious crisps addiction I don't see the interest. Utterly crap food, dead behind the eyes staff, shockingly poor quality. 7-11 et al, or more accurately it's owners are a Thai curse. Probably also why thais are getting fatter and fatter.

I'll re-interate Sateeb's post. Who are we to criticise how the Thai population view their situation. If they're are not on point, then it's up to them to instigate change.

I'm sorry to say HHTel and no kick intended, but as we just have seen and which are discussed in another subject at HHF there have never been "up to them" here. Its up to a few old hands here and that will not change in our lifetime. Btw, I have been into a couple of Familimarts changed to Tops and well from me only 2 stars but hopefully that will change. Management is all.
