Michael Parkinson has died, aged 88.

Post by Nereus »

Michael Parkinson has died, aged 88. RIP

A statement from Parkinson's family said he died after a brief illness on Wednesday.

"After a brief illness, Sir Michael Parkinson passed away peacefully at home last night in the company of his family," the statement to the BBC said.

"The family request that they are given privacy and time to grieve."

The acclaimed journalist and author, also affectionately known as Parky, presented his television talk show Parkinson from 1971 to 1982, and again from 1998 to 2007.

Very, very sad - absolutely classic interviews with the likes of Ali, The Goons, Billy Connelly along with Michael Caine, Dame Edna and many, many more!!

A class act, a good innings and what a life!!

Yes, quite a body blow really, although he'd reached a good age. Like the Queen, he's been one of those ever-present personalities throught my adult life.

I saw a clip from an early interview with Connelly, in which Billy casually said that we needed to address the decline of the English sausage. I immediately thought of Big Boy, which is a sad reflection of the impact this bloody forum has on my daily life.

It's just over a minute into this short video, which is well worth a look.

There's a load on BBC iPlayer ~(if you can access) - I'm sure I saw there was a tribute to him with clips of many of the interviews he had done. I've tried to find to no avail, but am hopeful..... Oh to see the one with "The Goons"

Well, here's two of them...

EDIT: Just watched it, it's Parky in Oz. Skipped the middle bit with Gough Whitlam, but by the end, after Spike came on, I was literally weeping with laughter!!
