Is it just me or is this forum just a sounding board for a few expats who live in Hua Hin with a chip on their shoulder ?

All I see are gripes about Thailand..how this doesn't work..that doesn't work..well why not go back to your country of origin ?

I think that most of us who live here are very happy to be here & realise how fortunate we are. We would (in most cases, I think) far rather stay here than go back to our countries of origin.
However, as in every other country in the world, there are problems & inconveniences that you come across in everyday life. The forum serves a good purpose to sound off & to get advice on how others handle similar problems.
I think you would hear a similar, or larger amount of discontent from similar forums in the "countries of origin" and far less optimism or happiness. :D

[quote="big jimmy"]Is it just me . Yes, plus a minute number of others who fail to understand about Thai life. We love it here but that does not mean that if there is something wrong, we will not say anything!

Yes it is you. I, like many other contributors, am not an expat. I find the information I gain from this forum very informative and useful. My plans are to become an expat within a couple of years - this board is helping me to plan.

I, like Big Boy, am a future expat.

As a planner (I'm a CPA) I like to know about the good, and bad, of whatever I am studying.

This board is a big help, and allows me to feel a part of Thailand even though I am in California.

I see negative comments, but not as bad as some boards. I've seen some people on these other boards who are definately better off to leave Thailand, but they don't

Anyway thanks to all

I would be in HuaHin tomorrow, happily "ex-patted" if it were financially possible to do so. In the meantime, I want to hear and see all the wrinkles and blemishes - as well as the beautiful smiles....better prepares me for the future

Most people will gripe about stuff wherever they live, there is good and bad, its all on the forum.

Maybe its just a reflection of your personality to find only the negative in everything.

If you take time to look around the forum, you'll find a lot of frequent contributors do not necessarily reside in Hua Hin itself, many are seasonal visitors who happen to like the place and would like to eventually settle there permanently.

Many of the queries/ gripes come from the people who have visited for a few weeks and have not taken the time to try to better understand the local customs. This is where the forum functions to promote discussion and a better understanding  of a given situation.

I settled in Thailand almost nineteen years ago, and am now based in Bangkok. There were no forums or internet then, so many things had to be experienced and lessons learnt from scratch. I have lived in Chiang Mai, Lopburi and Bangkok, and the local customs and attitudes vary from place to place. Hua Hin is no different.

Although I am an infrequent visitor to Hua Hin, the members on this board have made me feel most welcome, and I have made many friends/ acquaintences there.

I think it is a matter of attitude. There is nothing wrong with airing an opinion on something you may feel unhappy about; everyone is entitled to an opinion. Any differences in opinion are welcome to promote discussion; however strongly worded responses meant to provoke or shoot down that opinion without real cause (as found on many other boards) are certainly not welcome here.

The HHAD board is a community thing where the locals try to share and pool the local resources in Hua Hin. It is not a particularly big place, so it makes sense to try to help everyone else out. It makes life that much easier.

Be happy that they share their small slice of personal paradise (with the occasional bout in purgatory) with you and the rest of the world.

When they go back to their own countries they gripe even louder about the same things and in many cases are understood so they get caught out. Here nobody understands or gives a shit what they are talking about anyway.
Voted the best bar in Hua Hin three years in a row.
Well stocked fridge. Good music, pool, cable and UBC TV. Water features, fish, no hassles no chocolate starfishes.

Well I think this a fantastic board.
It is full of useful information for visitors (both long and short term) and for people (like myself) who will make their home in the area eventually.
In comparison to some other boards I have been involved in it is amazing in terms of helpfulness and politeness of the contributors. :thumb:

This forum is amazingly friendly and polite compared with some other Thai based forums, where most threads read something like this;

A: Where can I buy postage stamps?

B: In a post office, you dumb s***

C: What you would you know, you’ve been in a bar for the last ten years, you drunken a*******.

B: F*** ***!

I too, am a near future Hua Hin expat and I find this site invaluable.
It is informative and the more contraversial posts can spark a lively and amusing debate. Its a thumbs up from me! :thumb:
