non o visa

Post by sam »

When we arrive in HH to stay permanently (i hope) my husband will get a retirement visa, I will have to come as a dependant, please can someone tell me if I can report in to HH immigration office or do I need to leave the country every 90 days? Also can I renew the visa in Thailand , as he can, or do I have to go back to the UK?

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure you'll be covered as a dependant under your husband's retirement. You'll be best getting a Non O visa yourself before you leave - although you can convert from Tourist to Non O within Thailand for 2,000B. Just makes life easier.
Would have thought you'd just report to imm every 90 days with your husband and make the annual extension at the same time as him a year later.
However, I'd emphasise that I havn't done this, but that's my understanding. Hopefully someone can be a bit more specific.
If not, just call the Thai Embassy.
PS, make sure you bring your marriage certificate over. You may need it certified by The British Embassy and translated. Not sure, but you'll definitely need the paperwork.

Correct

We are doing the same in July. As I understand it, it is best to get non o for both of you first then when there apply for non o retirement with your wife as dependant. Not heard about translating of marriage licence though you will definately need it for dependant visa.

Bank

just a bit more info i found:
keep the bank account in your name only. When you have had minimum 800,000 Baht in the account for at least three months, go to the Immigration office and apply for an annual extension of stay for yourself for the reason of retirement. Then your wife can apply for an annual extension as your dependent and she does not need to show proof of money in an account or monthly income.

In other words, with 800k in your account, both of you can get annual extensions.

They sound like valid points, niggle and it's my reading of the relevant parts of Police Order that changed everything on Oct 1st 2006.
Only thing I'm not sure of is whether an income of 65k a month would suffice for the dependant visa as well. I'd have thought so.

Think so

Post by niggle »

As far as I can gather 65k does that. However, money will be needed in accounts anyway so I am going to go for a belt and braces option and have money in the account and also submit my 65k as well. Better safe than sorry just in case they change their minds !
Either way cash will be needed (and plenty of it) it the first few months.

Thanks both for answers, that was interesting niggle about account as we have a joint account at the moment. We will have open a single account as well. Can the money be in an interest paying deposit account or does it have to be a current account? :)

account

Post by niggle »

Deposit account is probably the safest option, current accounts may be a bit more tricky to get.
However I am in HH at end of April so will put a post on about how things went with setting up a bank account.
Also will post about general experiences in getting things set up over there
