why bj, don't you think people with other languages should be able to converse with each other as well? There´s plenty of topics and threads where you can use Welsh language as well.

Big Jimmy, I don't understand a word of these languages. However, I personally think that a place where some Scandinavians (who make up a large part of Hua Hin's expat & tourist communities), who may have struggled a little to put their thoughts into English for the benefit of us, can now debate & discuss freely & with ease is a brilliant idea.
Do you object to the Thai forum as well? Or can you read Thai, so that's OK? Many of us (me included) can't read Thai, so that's another non English part of the forum that has been here for quite some time.

I think the beauty of this website is that it really reflects the thoughts of the actual community in Hua Hin. People are happy and willing to lend a hand even though they come from very different backgrounds.
I've seen Dawn and JW go off on an (English) tangent (I never knew what 'spotted dick' was till I read Dawn's post), as have some of the others who also post on this board. (I had a real laugh about the 'dundee cake' post - learnt something there too).
When I attended the first HHAD get-together, I noticed a lot of the people there were speaking their own language, but they still made me feel welcome and used English. Judjing from the amount of Nordic speakers there, they could have started the board in their own language and we'd be none the wiser to it's existence.
As the board grows (from something like three posts in a week, to the present number) the membership also grows and will become more diverse. I, for one, welcome the startup of the Nordic section, as it gives me another new facet into the way other people live.
Err, Swahili, anyone??

Re: english forum
Erm, the whole forum is English speaking apart from this little section - it maybe a little frustrating not being able to understand it but now I know how non native speakers feel when we blather on using our slang.big jimmy wrote:If this is no longer an English speaking forum then just tell me...

Why? They can tell from the title of the opening thread what language it is. There is one Finnish one there led by BG at the mo & at least 2 other languages (I think) led by Norseman. Looking at it, even I can see that & I don't speak any of the languages.Rider wrote:Should you not divide the Nordic forum into their respective languages?
Afterall Norwegian is nowhere near the same as Finnish (which a Finn told me was nothing to do with other Nordic Countries! ) and even Swedish differs somewhat.

Absolutely correct Rider.Rider wrote: Afterall Norwegian is nowhere near the same as Finnish
We have divided the Nordic forum into one Finnish section and one Scandinavian section.
The point is that Swedish, Danish and Norwegian are basically the same language, while Finnish, as you say, is quite different from any other language on this planet.
An outsider, (most of us) would think Finnish is similar to Hungarian, but that is not the case. The two languages is far from similar even though the belong to the same group of languages . (Finno-Ugrian).
A lot of Finns however do speak Swedish, like Bamboo Grove does, and will thus be able to participate in the Scandinavian section if they want to.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

Finnish and Estonian are as close as Thai and Laotian are.
