Tampering with food

Post by DawnHRD »

I was in the Shopping Mall today & was wanting some eggs. Instead of just their own "make", they had a range of supposedly healthy ones with Omega 3 etc in, mainly from a company called "Doctor Henn". Whilst looking at them, I saw that one was antibiotic fortified!

Since when was it a good thing to dose animals up with antibiotics? I thought it was one of the more dodgy aspects of mass production style farming (along with steroid use). I assume this is because of bird flu? But even then, antibiotics aren't any use against a virus.

I find this seriously disturbing. Particularly, as they're being sold in a country that might well think it a benefit.

Has anyone seen anything similar?

I've seen something like that over at Foodland, but I usually don't get my eggs from the supermarket. I also wonder how they fortify eggs with omega 3 as that's found mainly in fish oils. Antibiotics? Disturbing, yes.

There's a local fresh market ten minutes' walk away, there's also a provision shop on my alternative route home who have an egg farm and are able to provide me with those double-yolk eggs...

I try as far as possible to support the local businesses.

Up near our place in Issan there are a couple of big factory style chicken farms and they feed the chickens this kind of stuff to stop them dying in the cramped sheds they live in. I can’t see that putting anti-biotics into the food chain is a good thing.

I believe they passed laws in the US, EU and UK and perhaps Australia/NZ as well, that all livestock feed no longer contains antibiotics. We ingest the meat and then build up a resistance making it harder for us humans to fight off infections with antibiotics prescriped by a doc when we're ill.

I've seen the eggs Dawn refers to in Carrefour here. I did notice the Omega 3 tag but not the antibiotics. I only bought them once and didn't like the flavour too much.

I would say eat some fresh or smoked salmon regularly, or buy Omega 3 tabs at the pharmacy if you want to take it. Pete

I don't know if cod liver contains Omega 3? I remember as a kid getting a dose when I couldn't kee...LOL.

I also read that first 'cold' pressed virgin olive oil has as much good stuff in it as an omega 3 capsule. I guess you take a swig of the stuff daily.

I really go overboard with smoked salmon, I love it but it doesn't like my budget here. Hopefully I'm getting enough omega 3 but I know the stuff gives me too much sodium for the blood pressure. :( Pete

PS: All I see here is Norwegian smoked salmon. I don't know if wild or farm raised? Anyone have any good words about Scottish smoked salmon? Same as Norwegian?

I understand that mackerel - amongst other oily fish - is packed with Omega 3. Cheap, readily available and great on the BBQ. Why bother with capsules?

As for the eggs I imagine that since they can now grow a human ear on the back of a mouse that they can create an Omega 3 bearing hen's egg! They are probably the same people who make the Omega 3 capsules!

I wouldn't trust them if I was you! 8)

Mackerel has a bad rep for mercury levels. I know the one's caught in the Thai gulf and either served fresh or canned are not the 'king' species but I still think about it. Anyway, below is a chart on mercury levels. Pete

Pete you worry too much! I'd still rather have a barbecued mackerel than a rubber pellet containing oil.

Jaime, I agree with you, but I think my hotel here might object if I start barbequing mackerel in the room!

I thought it was the EPA/DHA levels that counted?

Good old fashioned tinned tuna is good for Omega 3

Get the variety in brine - no oils, or other flavours.

Strain the water off - toss in a salad with a bit of wine vinegar - nice!

Since being diagnosed with a cholesterol problem I regularly have a tuna salad as above - 2 or three times a week
