How to pack?

This is a question for those of you that have moved about the Kingdom. When you moved big pieces of furniture and the like, how did you cover them? Was there a need? I would have thought several hours in a dig arsed truck on Thailand's highways would reduce the average Index wardrobe to fire wood...!
I have several pieces to move and don't want to end up with it all smashed to pieces. Neither can I afford to encase each item in a Home pro duvet.
Any ideas would be gratefully received...
