You are required to wear a crash helmet on a motorcycle, but you dont have to wear a cycle helmet on a bicycle...

On my last infraction of this law, the MiB told me after 6pm do as I please. Is this written, or was the MiB suggesting that there is a slim chance I would get caught at night considering most MiB's are in the karoke at this time. Pointless law if it's not enforced at night when most of the crazies are out.

I believe the way the law reads, (here in HH) the driver has to wear a helmet. the passengers do not.

and supposedly you are not allowed to have a smaller person sitting in front of you when you're driving a motor bike.

As far as helmets go it can be a bike helmet or a construction helmet. I don't think the law is specific.

as for after 6pm he may be referring to a lot of police being off duty. chances of getting caught are less.

If you really didn't want to know the answer, why the hell did you ask me the question!!!

yes, I can see those yellow hard hats helping as your head plows into a concrete curb at 80km/hour. But i suppose the Tesco 100 baht specials arent going to help much either. Its unfortunate the helmets arent full face, but I guess it doesnt matter what helmet it is when is usually in the front basket.

Don't forget that when you have a 'full face helmet' you must wear it cocked high back on your head and have a fag hanging out of the side of your mouth.

Failure to adopt this pose means that you will miss out on the good chance of breaking your neck when you DO have a collision - due to the abnormally high centre of gravity of your skull occasioned by this fashionable mode of wearing the helmet

Terry, I never noticed that unitl yesterday. Sure enough, a thai bloke ride past me on his m-bilke, full face helmet propped up on the peak of his noggin, and I'm sure any hitting any pothole out of the norm would have sent skidding across the soi. never day goes by without a chuckle...Are there any of those full face helmets in the bottom of the west pond? I could use one...

I buy those Index ones for about 800 baht in the Pae Mai market and they're sturdy enough to offer decent protection (I speak from experience!).

This is my seventh one now as they keep getting stolen, I wouldn't mind if the thieves wore them and it saved a life but the little bastards just sell the things for another bottle of sang som.

THe gardener upgraded from a typical grass whipper, to something out of a Steven King novel. Its a grass whipper, but it has this horrible big rotating blade instead of the syntheitic line. I'm sure this thing would down a 1 inch sapling. All the best to him and his steel toed flip flops..

So long as you have something other than a baseball cap on your head, you may get away with it.

See all kinds of interesting 'crash helmets' here.

Go for what Buksi suggested, not a GI helmet from the Vietnam era or a builders hat.

The main consideration I suppose is that 'I don't want to die', even if many do so every day, don't be one of them.

There was an article last month in the Bangkok Post about changes to the laws:

1) No more than 2 people on a bike

2) ALL riders have to wear helmets

3) ALL helmets have to be "proper" motorcycle helmets - no crash hats etc

as to enforcement of the laws.....well take a look at the main road after 6pm and show me anyone who plays by the rules....

If you want a full face the shops on the Station road have em....both normal ones and motocross open front/peaked versions.

Wear a titchy "beanie" type and kiss yer face goodbye if/when you come off.

Id also recc a pair of thin "summer" gloves having seen the state of my mates hands when he came off on sand and gravel.

They usually use half a coconut and a piece of string.
