Heres my list

The little supermarket down from the police station.... well done for the stock ... also the manager takes an interest in what they don't have in stock... including ordering me a whole box of Rizla licorice flavour papers.

Yamaha City on Phetkassherem Rd (?)...... order a part and it turns up in 3 days .... do discounts for regular customers

The "Harley" chop shop on the canal road... the only place Ive taken my big bike and it came out still fully working and it didn't break down again within 10 minutes.

Tesco, the cinema and Home Pro score a distinct ZERO .... don't understand / haven't got a clue / don't give a f**k .....

short list eh?

oh....and the little bloke who repairs bike tyres all hours directly west of the traffic light crossroads..... 2 times repairs with a 20bht charge (plus inner tube cost) despite 20 minutes of work..... he gets my business every time.

Best IT/Computer shop in Hua Hin is IT-Net next to the Shell pump on Petchkasem road. Bangkok prices and can get anything to order.

The worst is IT Pawin, incompetent and over priced.

I would often agree with you, but today had a great experience there. Got my shopping, including 2 cheap toys for littl'un. One was 39b & the other was the only one on a display for 79bt.
Of course, the more expensive one had no barcode, when I got to the till. The girl rang for help, but got nowhere. I knew there were no others, but didn't want to give the toy up (bow & arrow - I thought he'd love it). The girl got fed up with waiting for no-one coming to help, so asked me how much it was. I told her in Thai that one toy was 39 bt, the other 79bt. Instead of just putting the toy under the checkout (as they normally do) she just scanned my 39bt toy once more & gave me it for that price. Good for her!! :D

" BAD ONES" ???

Wow .It took this thread all of 2 posts to get negative . :?

Love the x-ray of 'homo expatius ignoramus' avatar BTW .Jaw is about right but brain a little large don't you think ? No cogs in between either which is why the species cannot engage brain before opening it's mouth .

Back to topic .Always had good service at Halex .Your shopping is in your car before you know it and the owner knows his wines .

Mai Mee is the most common phrase used by anyone working in a shop to be fair though Crazy88.

I think after Hello and Thankyou its the next most important thing to know for Tourists.

A blank look accompanied by "Mai Mee" or for the fluent in English shop assistant "NO HAVE" You've gotta love'em.

Sorry to go against the grain folks but all it takes to be happy here is the proper attitude. Well......except for the bank maybe.

We actually have clerks in Home Pro that come and give us a hug when we see them.......my last memory of having a clerk give a rats ass about us in the States was......mmmmm.....NEVER. You were luck just to find someone to wait on you, that is if they weren't busy talking to a friend on their cell phone.

Yeah, yeah, they don't always have everything you want and sometimes the results of transactions are a little strange, but for crying out loud, can't you speak Thai?????? No, not too many of us can and if we could life would be normal like it is for The Thais.......get over yourselves. If you knew anything about the Thai culture you would know the probably equate baked beans to eating cow poop. I can barely get my wife to even warm up a can of beans for me, much less think about eating them.

I'm sure at the appropriate moment I am as bitchy as the next guy or worse, but fortunately I'm retired now and I try to remember what it was like when I had to work..........If the worst thing to happen to me in a day is not finding what I want in the store that sounds like a pretty good deal.

I still remember the first two weeks we were here (prior to "housing" issues)......I could have sworn I was in heaven. Every night I stood on the balcony of our rented condo and swore life couldn't possibly get any better.

A little more Mai Ben Rai might go a long way for us Gwielos.

I thought the OP asked for a list of "good shops"
TIGR & Crazy88 seem to be along my lines of thinking, I can't weally understand where all the negativity stems from, it is human nature to complain I spwose.
You can find a 101 things wrong with HomePro, Tescos if you want, but they provide us with a great range of products under one roof. Sure some of the stuff isn't in stock and we have to wait a whole week - boo hoo.
Some don't understand me cos they speak foreign or summit - I've had that s**t a lot in 4 years, if they don't improve I might just learn their language for them.
Anyway this negativity is positive, back home we complain about paying the mortgage, credit card bills, how to afford the next holiday etc. Here our main worries are about the storage capacity in the local DIY store.

Sorry OP:
HomePro - Always staff on hand, wide product range, load it in car for you, much stuff isn't stocked there mind, but deliveries are 90% within a week.
'Kodak' Print Shop - Across from Corner 84, print any photos and sizes you want, the Chinese/Thai girl with glasses is superb
Halex - For alcohol, load in your car as crazy said, deliver to your house if not live too far, always deliver within 2 hours. Good stock
Ham & Bacon - Staff service great (apart from that big farang bloke  ), great food selection and quality for stuff from back home.
Bookazine - Book/Magazine shop just at the beach road/Hilton junction, best selection in town for me.
All-in-Hua Hin - maybe not for service or olives, but great for take-away of cold meat/ham, cheese, pate, sausages, jars of pickles etc

Apart from that the town stinks.

Just returned from Home Depot, here in California. Bigger scale idea of Home Pro.

Many clerks walking around, but hard to get one in the area you want. Some helpful, some I know they don't have a clue. Checkout kids are more interested in talking to each other than customer service.

Sounds kind of same same

Lindo -

My post was in response to comments on your original post....I think my brain works just fine, thank you, and I'm quite capable of determining where and what I want to comment on.

Good places/shops

My favourite is the little local Thai shop down the road. I can sit there undisturbed while I enjoy a beer and if I need the odd job done around the house, they're quick to arrange it for us.
Other good shops include Home-Pro, Tesco, the super market near the square, etc, etc.

Quite strange that some on here complain when they hear rumours of a Disney World opening, saying how it will scar Hua-Hin and yet these are the same people who complain because things are not always in line with their home countries. This is Thailand and first and foremost, Thailand caters for the Thais. Remember that and you'll get along just fine.

Some mentioned baked beans? You can get baked beans everywhere in Hua Hin. If not Tesco then try the super market near the square. Oh and by the way, some Thai do like beans - my wife loves them warmed up on toast. I've complained in the past about not being able to get quality toys here but the fact is, you can get them, simply go to Bangkok.

So, maybe Hua-Hin does not have all things British or all things American and for me, they have nothing South African. Surely we can't expect these stores to cater for hundreds of different cultures from across the globe.

Chill out and go with the flow - you'll enjoy life here so much more.

On the topic of getting what you want, I notice there is an increasing number of Muslims in Hua Hin and as they tend to eat mutton/lamb rather than pork, does anyone know where they get it from?

Would love a few lamb chops or a good mutton curry but just can't afford to pay for imported lamb and of course I would prefer to support local supply.
Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact

This subject came up some time ago, and would be in the achives that were transfered with the recent change of server.
There is supposedly a Muslim community somewhere not far North of where you are Takiap. It was said that you could buy mutton direct from them. Also, I believe that it was mentioned that a couple of the resturants in town have a regular supplier, but again this info is no longer here.

Buksida, you wrote an address to access the old achives, can we have it again please, as I cannot find it. Or post it as a sticky, thanks.
