tax and ebay purchases

What is the understanding on customs duty (tax) for purchases on e-bay. Is there such a thing in LOS?

CharlesH, I used to do a lot of overseas selling on Ebay and when I posted the items (mainly books), I used to put on the customs slips that they were gifts.
Most of the times they get through without duty being paid, but clients did have to cough up a couple of times in Europe for duty.

Best thing is to tell the seller not to put any invoices or paperwork relating to the goods in with the parcel, just the item they are sending, and as I said before get the seller to mark as a gift.

Most of my sales were around the $100 mark, but could not say how you would go with any high value items. Hope that helps

Hi

I've bought loads of stuff on Ebay and have never been asked to pay any duties here in Thailand. Recently bought a phone/PDA from China and no duty on that either. Most of the other goods I buy are kiddies toys as quality toys are rare over here. I do know they will want duty/tax if you're importing something with a very high value though. My mate had a diamond wedding ring made up in South Africa and he had to declare it and pay duty although the duty was not very much.

You also have to watch just how you have it sent to Thailand. I recently had a couple of small, high value items, sent from the UK. As the seller offered DHL door to door, for nearly the same price as Royal Post, I had it sent via DHL. It attracted 10% Customs Duty, plus a small handling fee in Bangkok. Good service, and probably worth a bit extra for the security, but not warranted for cheaper stuff.
