International money order - useless bankers
Any tips on how to send an international money order from here (before you ask it's the only way I have available to me to pay for something in America)? I tried going to my local bank and to be honest they didn't have a clue what a money order was (indeed they seemed a little uncertain what money were, or even what a bank was to be honest). Any tips greatly appreciated, including Thai phrases to use etc.

Western Union should be the way to go. I believe that Thailand Post also can do it via Western Union.

Fraid they won't take western union, and the western union is at the very same banks that just don't seem to know the basic concept of money, banking or international (apparently international and internet are the same word). Tried the post office and they said they couldn't do a money order to the USA, that western union was my only option. Seriously, banking here is a complete bloody disaster. Any time I want to do anything vaguely complicated (such as an international bank transfer - just met with blank faces and being told to get money out of the ATM.. no I'm transferring it from MY ACCOUNT to ANOTHER ACCOUNT). Why can't banks employ staff with more than 3 brain cells to rub together? </rant>

Paypal's no good, I don't have a credit card, hence the need to do it this way. And the reason the ATM method works btw is that there are no human beings involved to screw it up!

Do you not have a friend / know somebody that does have a credit card? Have them use it to pay the US account and then give them the cash back here. With my credit card, (MC) I can see with Internet Banking exactly what the total debit to my card was within 24 hours or so.SuperTonic wrote:Paypal's no good, I don't have a credit card, hence the need to do it this way. That's what I had to do in the end but really it should be possible to do basic banking at a bank. A bare minimum would be giving the staff a sheet with a list of basic banking services in English with a Thai translation next to it so customers can do the time-honoured point and grunt. Banks here are such a pain in the arse, I've had nothing but hassle with them. Still, I guess if they're my biggest problem then I don't have that much to worry about.Nereus wrote:Do you not have a friend / know somebody that does have a credit card?
