Re: Govt plans Pattaya, Cha-am ferry link
The present people-in-power really seem set on improving tourism here in H.H.
Just last week Prayut announced the importance of a high-speed rail link..to boost tourism, & within the last month there was also mention of making the road from H.H. to Pranburi into a 4-lane highway..as part of the town's improvement plan.
(S'funny how a few yrs ago when the bulldozers started on the very same road-widening project..it all came to an end when someone in H.H. administration decided a 4-lane road would..wait for it..
...make it to noisy for residents in Khao Takiap)..
Now yet another plan for a sea-link between Patts & Cha Am..?
(Does someone connected to this scheme have some sea-front land just primed for a jetty-project..?)
As a final note...Did I hear once that there's frequently a large swell on the sea between here &
Patts..??

Large swells....seems that usual suspect has no idea about navigation. Of course the small boat that crossed the gulf couple of years ago wasn't suitable.

The Pattaya - Cha-am ferry link has been booted about by various administrations over the last few years, without anything ever happening.europtimiste wrote:Large swells....seems that usual suspect has no idea about navigation. By the way, the catamaran used a few years for the Pattaya / Pak Nam Pran crossing was entirely suitable for its purpose.
Cancellation rate in the high season (when the winds and waves are high) would be about 10-20%.

Re: Govt plans Pattaya, Cha-am ferry link
Seems several "Private Enterprises" have tried and failed (purely on profitability I assume) with the Pats - HH crossing over the past several years, has the Cha Am link been attempted before?
Would it be fair to say that if this ever went ahead, it would likely remain on a far longer basis regardless of (probable) losses with the government not wanted to lose face and also insist on pushing tourism?

Re: Govt plans Pattaya, Cha-am ferry link
I might be wrong, but it is my understanding that the last ferry venture failed primarily due to a serious lack of business skills. The owners certainly had the money to start their venture, but the business model was a joke. Sorry if I'm offending anyone here.
Will a ferry service between Cha-Am and Pattaya succeed? Personally, I think there is a good chance that it will. To begin with, I think Cha-Am is a far more attractive/convenient docking point than Pak Nam Pran. This alone could result in many Thai people using the service, whereas the last venture was aimed almost entire at the foreign tourist market. Additionally, if government owned/backed, there will be sufficient funding to support the service until it becomes properly established.
Anyway, I for one would like to see such a service actually succeed.

Re: Govt plans Pattaya, Cha-am ferry link
I wonder who the target market is? Foreign tourists of course, but to succeed I would think the Thai market would be needed. How many Thai's would use this I wonder. Is Pattaya a draw for them? Hua Hin/Cha Am seems to be so maybe that would attract the local market

Personally, I would like to see a larger, vehicle carrying vessel. I think by-passing Bangkok could be an attraction for both commercial and private travel if priced competitively. Of course, building an adequate terminal at either end would be a challenge.

How fast would a decent sized ferry (i.e. stable enough in most conditions) travel? It's about 100 km across the gulf from Cha-am to Pattaya side. Bearing in mind that it's not necessary to go through Bangkok by road, would it really be worthwhile?

3 hours at 20 knots
Re: Govt plans Pattaya, Cha-am ferry link
Was there not a government ferry operating this route 30 years ago?
