Re: A few online Thai Language starting points
It may be an old thread but has given a link to, I think, the book that started my own education in the Thai language. Way back in the early nineties I used 'The Fundamentals of the Thai Language' to learn some Thai while away at work and then learn how to actually pronounce the words correctly once back in Thailand. No internet then and I found that book a good all round starter.

One resource that I don't see mentioned is:
http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Thai/maanii1/fsmaanii1.htm
It's a beginner reading course that uses old Thai elementary school books. It also has exercises after each lesson. I thought it was pretty nice way to start, even though the page is very old and quite an eyesore by today's standards. Sadly it only covers the first two Maanee books, I would have loved that kind of approach for the rest of the series too, but it did give a good basis to continue further in Thai language studies.
And when I need some Thai text translated, I usually copy-paste them to http://www.thai-language.com/bulklookup which breaks it down to words, recognizes compounds, and gives the different meanings of the words, so I can usually piece together what is really meant.

One of my favorite websites is https://www.thai2english.com
I’ve found it to be much more accurate than google. I also paid the license fee and installed their windows based client software, it links to their internet backend and has a wealth of resources that aren’t available on the free website.
