Bringing Golf Clubs into Thailand
Bringing Golf Clubs into Thailand
As this is golf club specific, I'll try here for some views first rather than the travel forum.
I've never taken golf clubs onto a flight so I'm wondering whether there are any specific airlines that look "favourably" on them, weight allowance wise?
As these would be new clubs, to be used by me, could I expect any grief with Thai Customs and import taxes? They'd be coming from the UK to Thailand.
Assuming a full set of 14 clubs (steel shafted irons), does anyone have any idea what I can expect in terms of extra weight charges? Say that I'm on the weight limit with my normal stuff so the clubs are excess. Ball park figures are fine.
Thanks for any info.

“You can take your golf equipment as part of your checked baggage, provided it does not exceed the maximum weight restrictions for checked baggage and is packed in a recognised bag or case to safeguard against damage. This bag can be up to 190 x 75 x 65cm (75 x 29.5 x 25.5in).
If you carry your golf umbrella or parasol separately it will count as one item of your checked baggage allowance.”
Re: Bringing Golf Clubs into Thailand
You need to check with your airline as rules differ. Some airlines allow a golf bag and clubs free of charge on top of your free allowance.

Re: Bringing Golf Clubs into Thailand
Just been looking for flights to Thailand for Xmas. Looks like all airlines count golf clubs as standard check in luggage, I use Etihad and Emirates a lot when coming to Thailand. Etihad did transport golf clubs free up until middle of last year but not now. Most airlines allow you to buy excess luggage allowance at a discount.
In my time of dying all want for you to do is take my body home..... so I can die easy
Re: Bringing Golf Clubs into Thailand
Depending on the airline it may be worth getting a business class ticket which would absorb the extra weight. I doubt if you would get stopped at the airport and if so You could say you will be taking them out again later or take the hit. I have brought a full set in before without any problems or being stopped. Also brought in a bicycle again without being stopped.
You might want to get a lightweight travel bag to reduce the weight.

You will have no problem at Bangkok customs. Very unlikely they will stop you and you are allowed to bring your golf clubs here. Airlines are all different and bear this in mind before you book your ticket. I think Turkish and Emirates are golf club friendly, but double check on their websites.

Emirates count it towards your 30 kg in economy

Thanks for all the replies.
I'll do some homework and see what various airlines charge. Although I think I'll get clubs cheaper in the UK, it might work out that with additional charges I might as well get them here. At least I can get fitted in the UK.
Good to hear that customs won't be a problem. I didn't think it would be with all the golfers who come over on holiday.

I have never had any trouble with Thai Customs at the airport as regards bringing golf clubs into Bangkok - neither have my friends. For what it is worth IMO the most important thing is that you can get fitted in the UK - but make sure they can check your swing speed because the shaft is number one in importance for most of us - not that many give it the attention it warrants

Agree.
I'll probably head off for a 90 minute fitting session at the Ping factory in Gainsborough and see what they have to suggest. As I'm fast becoming an old codger, I'm willing to take a look at graphite shafts for the irons this time.

I was living in Beijing when the Chinese "copies" of brand named clubs started to be made. There was a purser with Air Canada who flew in once a week from Vancouver --on his return trip he carried his golf clubs--nobody noticed that he never arrived with a set.
Re: Bringing Golf Clubs into Thailand
A very good place to go lomu you will at least know what type of shaft now fits your swing speed. I am told the new steel shafts are also much lighter than in your previous years. Anyway good luck after which you can only blame yourself for the poor shot!!

Don't forget if you are classed as non UK resident you could claim the vat back. 20%

How does that work then Mikey?Mikeyb wrote:Don't forget if you are classed as non UK resident you could claim the vat back. 20%
I spend all year here in Thailand but will be going back to the UK this summer with the intention of buying a new set of irons.
Are you saying I can claim the VAT back on my purchase?
