In a couple of weeks we have to meet a friend for dinner at the Marriott on Sukhumvit. We can't afford to stay there (about 7000 baht at night!!) - can anyone recommend a decent but cheaper hotel anywhere near there?
Thanks

Jim, check out the below links. I think the Marriott is on Soi 10, the Tara below is on soi 26, not a bad walk in the evening, but a taxi or tuk tuk would be better. Also, connected to the Tara is their sister hotel, the Imperial Impala. Their web site seems to be under maintenance. Both these hotels go back quite a few years, but clean and the rates should be good. Not luxury, maybe **1/2 or 3 if you want to judge that way. You'll see the Impala on the location map for the Tara, they are attached.Jim wrote:In a couple of weeks we have to meet a friend for dinner at the Marriott on Sukhumvit. The other is the Four Wings, also on soi 26 but further down. I've stayed in all of them going back to the 80's. One thing about 4 Wings is that the Taurus disco is right next door and the noise can be a pain of you're on that side of the hotel. Pete

I'd second The Dynasty Inn. Have stayed there twice recently. Well run and clean. Rooms have increased in price to 1,460 Baht a night.
If you stay there, try and get a room on the "nearside" of the courtyard at the back. We were a little disappointed the second time. Our room was on the far side of the courtyard, but it was the weekend and we arrived early at 8am, so room availability could have been limited.
The open air restaurant/bar area at the front is a good spot to people watch day and night.

We're going to Bangkok next weekend and have previously stayed in the Woraburi Hotel at the bottom of Soi Nana (4). Their prices have gone up considerably and it's now about 1,600 baht a night.
I'm married to a Scot, and I think I'm getting some of the Scottish traits, so I looked for a cheaper alternative in the area.
Found it: The Atlanta Hotel at the bottom of Soi 2. It's pretty basic, but clean. No TV in the room, but all we want is somewhere to crash after a boozy night out with friends. Cost: 700 baht for a fan room/800 baht for air-con (for 2 people). We actually 'lived' there for a couple of months when we first came to Thailand. It's totally unique and has oodles of character, and the swimming pool is fantastic. If you look at their website you'll see what I mean.

Had a bad experience at The Atlanta a number of years ago. I agree it's good value for money and has a lot of history. However, after being back home for 3 months, I had my girlfriend, now wife, meet me there after I flew back. I'd stayed at the hotel on numerous occasions and the long time staff knew me well and by name.
Knowing their policy on sex tourists, I'd faxed ahead from the UK to book and inform the hotel that my g/f would be coming up from HH. I mentioned her name and the fact that she'd have her ID card. We were sitting in the coffee shop having a couple of beers and the g/f put her elbow on my shoulder. The idiot of a restaurant manager - Pi Anong - went berserk. "Take you hands of him etc etc". I asked for the bill and it came with a type written note saying that our behaviour had been unacceptable and we were being asked to leave. If we didn't, the police would be called.
I sorted the situation out with reception, but I'll never stay again. Pi Anong, a truely dreadful woman.
Sorry, VS. I had always enjoyed it there, but the hotel staff's attitude has put me off for life

Just be comforted in knowing Lomu that she probably never goes to a Wat unless someone important dies, although preaching to everyone all the time.....wears yellow on Monday and blue on (Saturday?) and looks down her nose at those who don't......has never put 1 satang into a beggers bowl.....is an associate member and standby representative of the movie TV and internet censor board.......just bought two condos on Walking Street in Pattaya and will flip them in a year to a farang and laugh all the way to the bank....has shoulder length, fuzzy black hair and wears white pasty face makeup and dark red lipstick while prostrated and humble in the front row at some social event for a VIP.....voted for Thaksin six times in three elections....kicks dogs....and most serious, has a daughter who ran away with a farang to Europe and she doesn't send any damn money home! I used to stay at The Federal Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 11. Similar prices to The Atlanta but I haven't been there for at least a couple of years. Nice pool, nice restaurant & coffee shop, friendly staff. They also used to have a couple of suites for about 1600 baht. It's an old Vietnam War era R&R place and needs a lick of paint but clean enough and well located.

Interesting comments about the Atlanta from both Lomu and Pete. The restaurant manager was a bit of a dragon (from memory) and I always thought that she had an eye for the main chance. We were racking our brains trying to remember her name - I assumed that she may have retired or died but she's obviously still there. She used to flirt with single men and obviously didn't get what her daughter did!
We'll probably still stay there, but I'll have to remember not to show any PDA's (public displays of affection) when she's around. Maybe I'll just stick my foot out as she's passing with a full tray of delicious food...

I always found that the odd number sois were a little bit cheaper and quieter. I always use the restaurants and pool halls on that side of the road anyway so more convenient.Jaime wrote:I used to stay at The Federal Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 11. ..........................
I stayed in the Bangkok Inn Soi 11/1. Rooms are 990 and 1090.
