Least favourite bars.

Post by tonychang »

Cant say I can think of any bars that I hated in HH but there were certain types I avoided like the overpriced aircon bars for example.
There were some I wouldnt bother with that appeared only to cater to certain countrymen (one on selekam, always empty but full of stunners).

There's a lot of bars I don't drink in simply because through habit I go elsewhere. But there are also a number of bars I avoid like the plague, either for personal reasons or, for example, I've had my bill ripped off too many times.

In some cases I like the bar itself and get on well with the owner - it's usually the wife or certain staff that are ripping you off, but there you go.

I could list them here but don't feel comfortable doing this - most of the aforementioned do have their good points and are probably well liked by some punters.

I'd be interested to see what names, if any, get mentioned in this thread.

worst bars in hua hin

Post by buksida »

This is a good idea though it may piss some bar owners off. Anyway you can't please everyone so what the hell, we're all entitiled to our opinions.

This is pure personal choice and having crawled the bars for some years we do become a little ritual with our drinking habits. I'm usually too pissed to quibble over the bill and end up just paying it (or being ripped off). Bars I'm not to fond of for one reason or other (maybe past altercations, girls more fixed on their somtam than the customers, poor service or bill discrepancies) are: Toro, Coconuts, Hogsbreaths (when they were the hogsbreaths 1 & 4) and Breezin Bar.

Just my personal choice, there are some bars that I never go in at all ( usually the ones TC mentioned where the girls only speak Lao and Danish  ).

Heebio, there ya go, I've done it, spill some names :thumb:

As an avid Celtic fan you would think my favourite bar might be ............... the Celtic bar .... wrong! This bar is pure crap man and has nothing to do with my beloved Celtic FC. I went there to watch a Celtic match which was live on cable - no one helped me or were interested in watching the game and the staff hardly new what I was talking about as most of them cannot speak any English (or Scottish). The pool table and cues are crap, possibly the worst in Hua Hin, the hospitality is terrible and the atmosphere has nothing "Celtic" about it.

Whilst on the topic of crap bars, I think there are too many in Hua Hin, many of which could use a lick of paint, some imagination regarding interior design and cleaner usable toilets. It is good to see a new bar on the scene (The Nirvana) which has addressed all of these issues.

Okay....here goes.

Happy Bar

Before I go any further I'll say this...I like Henrik - he's a nice guy and he's trying to run a decent operation - the bar is invariably busy and there's always a lot of girls.

The problem I've got is with his missus, Porn. She will not hesitate to rip you off - been in there numerous times for a couple of beers and got stung with some 400 baht nonsense. Damn blatant n'all which is just taking the piss.

She's always at me to bar fine one of her girls as well and more than once paraded the new ones in front of me like some minging old Cowboy mamasan, in full few of the other punters in the bar. Hell, if I like a girl I'll talk to her, if I'm just out for a beer I don't want some poor wee girls treated like meat cos their greedy fat arse boss is desperate for a bar fine.

Okay....nuff said. I don't go near Happy Bar now - although I'm happy to chew the fat with Henrik whenever I bump into him. Sorry for the review mate.

Mondo Bar

The girls in Mondo attacked and almost killed my brother - nuff said.

Jaew's Bar

Used to reckon Jaew was a mate - even played darts for her team a couple of times.

At times, me and a couple of my pals were her only customers but my bill would still get stacked. This continued to happen more frequently so I kinda drifted from the place - I didn't cause a stink because a pal of mine was best mates with Jaew at the time.

Recent events have shown her in her true light and I will not be going anywhere near the place again - okay I'll walk through it to get to Nancy's but that's about it.

What was that recent thread about Thai's only seeing the where the next baht is coming from?!

Banana Bar (Hogs Breath4)

Again a bar where you've gotta watch your bill like a hawk. I do still frequent it from time to time cos I get on well with one of the girls, but I try to avoid it if at all possible.

The girls (they're not all katoeys) in here can also be quite aggressive if they think you're mucking one of their pals about - ie. you took her out once and ain't been back. I could do without the looks and the grief.

Toro

Looks great from the outside and there's always plenty of girls trying to drag you in - but once you're in it's shite. No girl comes near you and the bar ain't even very well set up for standing and having a craic.

Nah....not for me.

Celtic Bar

I've seen the recent posts and appreciate that a lot of guys for some strange reason used to rate this place.

I've never liked it - used to go in occassionally to watch the footie but there's so many alternative bars with UBC I don't even do that anymore.

This place has always been shit - never understood the attraction.

Okay....now I've said it like it is. Flame away....

Cheers.[/b]

I'm not going to enter the debate by naming names as it would not be a good move considering my position as co-organiser of the Pool League! There are certain bars I will not go in but I am sure the same could apply to others on here who will not go in my favourite bars - Vive La Difference!
However one bar I do go in, often on my way to karaoke, is Jaew Bar, and I have never had a problem there, so am intrigued by what Heebio has said,
Recent events have shown her in her true light
. If you feel able to expand I would like to know what you mean as this is the first I have heard anyone say something like this - I am not trying to say you are wrong, just want clarification. I have never knowingly had my bill 'stacked' there either but then that could be because I'm pretty 'tired and emotional' by the time I get there, similar to buksida!

Iv'e never had a problem with Jaew's bar either but to be honest try and avoid the karoke bars as they are usually full of pissed drinkers (maby i'm getting too old....!)
Been in the Celtic bar a few times and all the girls just stare at you from behind the bar, I diddn't find it particulary friendly.
Some bars I would never approach as the barrage of girls is off putting.
It's true to say that once you have found a couple of bars you feel comfortable in you tend to stick to them.
A lot of the bars could do with a revamp but I suspect money is the issue here.

@Wanderlust

I'm not prepared to go into the reasons for my comments about Jaew. The reasons are genuine as those in the know will testify to, but I'm not making them public knowledge.

You'll just have to take my word for it mate....sorry.

Oh, and check your bill next time you're in.

I understand your unwillingness to reveal what happened, but I have to say that it rather undermines your comments. You have made a personal criticism of Jaew, rather than her bar (although more often than not the owner/manager will determine how you feel about the bar) but the implication is that it is something more than simply being over charged. It would be better to explain fully so people that are not in the know can make their mind up, or not say anything at all in the first place. I have no personal interest in jaew's Bar, and I only know her from going to her bar, but I have always had a good chat with her. She is relatively intolerant for a Thai from what I have seen, but then again I think I would be pretty impatient with some of the dross that floats through her place. As I said before I have never had a reason to query my bill there, but if I did I'm sure she would listen as long as I didn't have the wrong attitude to start with. Is it possible that whatever transpired you happened to catch her on a bad night? Or are the 'recent events' you refer to nothing to do with the bar but a seperate unrelated personal dislike caused by something else? If that is the case then fair enough, you don't go to her bar but the comments we make on here can have a direct impact on people's livelihoods - if that is your intention then you really should explain why you feel that way, and not leave it hanging.

<<a lot of guys for some strange reason used to rate this place.>>

Celtic used to be the late bar of choice though it could get quite wild (read: full of drunks) at times. This is why I used to like it.
As far as Happy Bar goes, well its a bit like calling a short bloke lofty.

I get where you're coming from mate and understand the need for more info, but out of respect for others I cannot go into detail - but you're right, things are now more personal - in such that I heard about the way she treats her so called mates.

My opinion on her attitude to money stands however - I do not and will not apologise for this.

Sorry, I shouldn't have brought this up in the first place but I thought in for a penny....

Hi all,

Could the post http://www.huahinafterdark.com/forum/vi ... =4310#4310 on this forum have anything to do with why people are now wary of Jaews bar ?

Just asking

My impression is that MANY of the bars in Hua Hin do the stupid mistake of trying to take that little extra from you when they think you are too drunk to care or check your bill.

And that is why you now can see a few bars fully packed with returning customers spending a good deal of money, while the bars around only have staring bored girls with jealous looks on their faces.

Why is this so difficult to understand?: A happy customer that feels he is beeing treated with the normal human respect will return to this place instead of going to a bar where he is being ripped off or being treated like a pest despite being polite and friendly - while actually paying for their food. No man with a tad of self respect would do that!

It seems to me that many hopeful business owners (all over the world) just don't understand the most simple rules of running a service business. And as mentioned a thousand times on this forum (about Thais) - thinking more than one day ahead...

GREED and FEAR are your two main enemies when it comes to making money.

As a local you would hope that even the more dodgy bar owners would look further than the current bill - havin said that we all know that that will never be the case.
As a bar owner, without a girlfriend running the bar! i can say that on many occasions the customers ARE WRONG! When youve had 12 beers can you really be sure if it was 10 or 11!! I always take the customers side as you do not want to leave ill feeling - but when you do the stock check yourself b4 any staff have had a chance to do a fiddle it does kinda piss you off. I will add that this is much different from the stuff most of these posts refer to and in most of the mentioned bars in the thread i have been done also - I make a rule- 1st time bitten give a chance, if it happens again- dont go back -or pay as you go if there is some talent in the bar and you dont want to spite your own face!
Remember the late night places are there to prey on the poor drunks! So be wary. To keep with the thread - i would honestly say that there isnt a really good bar in town right now - some that have good points - but no total package. What do others think!

I would never argue on the case of one beer +/- on a 12 beer bill, and anybody can make a mistake also, not really a problem. Its when you KNOW that they are trying to rip you off the problem occurs. Its when they look at you like "will he find out?", and when you point it out they react like "oops, din't work..." and correct the "mistake" almost before you've finished your sentence. Talking more about 300 Bath out of nowhere.
