Hua Hin tailors - are they worth it?

Post by Gerry »

In HH until next Monday; my wife is thinking about getting something made up. We will be in BKK for a few days after here so we could do it there too.

Any recommendatins about the merits of HH tailors/dressmakers compared wih BKK? I know there is more choice there but it would be handy to have it done while we are in HH.

I am of very large build, and generally very hard on clothes. I've had many clothes made in Hua Hin, and have never had a problem.

I always use Majestic Tailors in BKK on Sukhumvit by soi 4.

They do a great job and really try to work around your schedule.

Thanks a lot. We will be staying on Soi 8 off Sukhumvit in BKK, so Majestic is a definite option.

Big Boy - any tailors in HH you would recommend over the others?

I've used many tailors. At the end of the day they all use the same back street sweatshops. The key is to specify exactly what you want, and don't be afraid to be critical if they get it wrong.

I suspect, as mentioned above, that a lot of outlets are served by a much smaller number of actual workshops.

The way I did it was to visit a good half dozen and prod around some of the clothes they had on display. In some places you have to be able to resist the hard-sell, but you get to look at their brochures, cloth, and to ask questions, which you can refine based on what you learned at the previous places. Keep the 'likely contenders' until last, so you are more sure of wat you need to discuss with them.

It isn't a guarantee, but based on that I got trousers made up at one shop as a trial, and while OK, I wasn't overly impressed with finished product. At one of the others, I got much better feedback to my discussions and had much better confidence in the individual I was talking to. I eventually negotiated a price with them on about 500 quids worth of stuff. While not absolutely perfect (the fit mainly, rather than the tailoring), what I got is good. I have no *substantial* complaints about any of it, and although I continue to have some small issues, these are so minor as to be almost nit-pickey. However, if you are going to have bespoke tailoring then you perhaps expect not to have those issues, even if the cost is way below what you would pay for similar quality off the peg-in-europe. The quality of materials - cloth - is absolutely outstanding!

The tailor I eventually used was JP Tailor in Poolsuk road, HH though I saw about a half dozen in BKK and 4 in HH. The city fatigues (business suit) I got is outstanding. The winter coat perhaps the weak point, though it looks very nice. Shirts OK, but at the price, you might find the top-end at M&S are just as good. I also got shoes made up (I have a weird foot shape and always have to go upmarket for shoes). They fit well, but somehow feel a little weak in the foot plate along the sole - perhaps not really meant to be trudged around in a European winter!
Had enough of the trolls. Going to sleep. I may be some time....

I have for years been using Nickermann's, a tailor shop in the basement of Landmark Hotel, Sukhumvit. Nickermann's are different in that they do not focus on tourists but on regulars and customers coming on recommendations.

I am extremely fuzzy and it is hard to satisfy my requirements but Nickermann's have always done a well done job both for mine and my wife's clothing.

Here are a couple of their work

My wife's wedding dress made by Nickermann's. It is an Escada design made in good quality Chinese silk.

The OP should know that nearly all so-called tailor shops are really not tailors but make "made-to-measure" clothing, which is not the same. The other important thing about the tailor shop is whether they use genuine fabrics or fake blend. The latter is most commonly used here in Thailand although you do find a few really good tailor shops in Bangkok.

If you visit Nickermann's your wife will not be disappointed and the lady owner, Dee, is an expert to find a type of dress that suit the woman in question. If you go there go there early as any fast making means short-cuts and in the end disappointment.

If the OP likes to hear more please feel free to PM me.

I had the tailor that shared the ajp golf tour office opposite o'neills copy some shirts I already had. 4 years on the tailors shirts still look brand new and the originals have long ago died. I paid between 400-700 depending on cloth per shirt. The IMO inferior originals were between 2500-5000 each so I am not complaining. The guy moved to satukarn square a while ago so where he is now I do not know.
