Go to the Banana IT shop on the top floor of Market Village. They have a wide selection at competetive prices. Anything you fancy. And they will install almost any additional software you desire at a low price while you wait.

The OP said, 'Nothing too fancy.' I take that to mean cheap, which Apple isn't.

Order from Apple online store. No copied software or other tricks. "Free delivery" but you still need to pick it up in the post office. Bought iMac and iPad2, both great. Should be discounted when nr. 3 is released. Much better price than Sweden. Possibly due to lower VAT.

Get a Mac!
It's been my tools since 1984 - works wonders - still not a self-playing piano.
It's more expensive, but will last you longer, less problems, no viruses - and interacts with the Windowsworld fluently.

Add an iPad or iPhone just to spoil yourself.

Two comments I'll make here: Don't buy from Banana IT and don't buy a Mac.

1) It has been reported several times here that Banana IT do not honour their warranties so if you have a problem with it after a week you're on your own.

2) Do you really want the additional expense of an Apple, and then having to pay extra for every software upgrade and program you want to run on it? Not to mention the learning curve of a new OS if you've never used it before? And getting it looked at when something goes wrong?

Don't really need to re-hash the old Mac vs PC argument again, the OP wanted something basic for email and browsing - you can pickup a netbook for 9-11k and a basic laptop for 12-14k. If worried about Windows and security put the latest version of Ubuntu on it, it has everything you need for your requirements and its free!

Don't forget to test the machine in the store and make sure you get what you're buying.

Banana IT: Hell no. Search expat forums and you'll find they have the worst reputation of the nationwide chains.

Power Buy: No for netbooks. Two months ago most of the models they had were several years old ones that were reviewed as below average when they were released to the market. Power Buy's prices were the same as the manufacturer suggested when the items were first released. The other models were from the manufactures with the poorest quality control and at the bottom of aftermarket support ratings.

So where else would you recommend?

I'm out of touch and my friend is rather naiave so would appreciate all the help you guys can give. As said before it ideally should be reliable, not too expensive as all he want to do is emailing and surfing

Thanks in advance

Why not try the Scandinavian guys at InvadeIT on Soi 3.
Went there a while back to buy a netbook/notebook and they were very helpful - they have both low and high-end products.

Another place is on the top floor of the old shopping mall, but not in the big shop at the back.
There is a small place outside that sells (mostly Acer) netbooks and notebooks - I eventually bought an Acer notebook for the gf there for just over 10k.
Even our Buksi said it was a good buy when he saw it!!

Call Kuhn Don at 032534616. He have a small IT shop near the railway crossing at Soi 56 I think. Browse cataloques and pamphlets and order from him. He is a nice chap and will install any software you like for free - and gives good service too!
