FireFox 9.01

Post by sandman67 »

Allo fellow HHADers

Just a quick enquiry for shared experience here in respect of FireFox s "new" version 9.01

IMHO its a mess.....seems to this XP user running a 6 year old Inspiron 6000 laptop that it runs lke a clunker, is a wee bit buggy, freezes and stutters, and seems to be (at times) eating up so much CPU runtime that other programmes have a hard time.

For example, if Im downloading a couple of files, watching a flick from an AVI file, a MKV or even a very small FLV is a nightmare of stutters and stops. Open up task manager and sure enough FireFox is chewing up the CPU capacity.

Also, when I type a response to a thread post and hit send, it sometmes sits there frozen for anything up to a couple of minutes....look at the activty montor and its trying to connect to some site called http://www.weatherforecastmap.com or some sodding Google related cack monitoring system?????

Scanned with AVAST and SPYBOT and it aint a virus issue.....

SO....anyone else found that running the new version of FireFox on an older computer is a bt of a strain?

think maybe that its been "optmised" for Windows 7 and more up to date processors.

Of course the pig is now I cant roll the version back to what it was before the update. DIVX Player same same all over again.

Pigs me off because Im a big loyal FireFox fan, and none of the potential issues were flagged on the update page.

It does the same thing on newer computers also.

I've found, that if it seems to freeze, open another tab and it gets going again. I'm getting fed up with it and have downloaded the latest version of Safari which outruns Firefox easily at the moment.

I'm considering it, it's everytime you log on now.

Firefox became a HUGE memory hog a few versions ago. I was a major fan too but it got to be too much. I didn't really notice a CPU cycle problem, but FF was sucking up memory like crazy, and could create a 'lock' problem with T'bird. I live and die by T'bird so one of them had to go...

I switched to Chrome. Google will spy on me, but when they do, they will be some seriously bored mofos. Adblock is now available for Chrome.

GF still uses Firefox and I put it on my Win 8 testbox, but I rarely use it anymore. I hope they get it back together. I loved Firefox.

That's why I'm still using FireFox version 6.xx. Funny thing is they still send out regular security updates for my version even though it's that old.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

I'm running an oldish Toshiba laptop with XP on FF version 10.0.02 & don't suffer from any of the mentioned problems.
I don't do automatic updates as i have NIS & sometimes the toolbar isn't compatible straight away.

Nope, no roll back option.
Two things you can try.
Upgrade to the latest 10.0.02 version & see if it's any better.
Or ditch the 9.0.1 FF version you updated to, using revo uninstaller, advanced mode (gets rid of all the unwanted files) & download & install the version you had before (probably 9.0) or an earlier one, from here.

It has been well documented that later versions of FF can cause memory leakage problems with some XP systems so you may want to completely remove FF 9 and install an older version:
http://www.oldapps.com/firefox.php

There maybe security issues with doing this though so be careful what you click.

I've used the latest version 10.02 and now 11 on Win 7 and XP without issue so maybe give that a go also as suggested above.

I'm also on Firefox 10.02 and, so far, no problems.

Here is a bit of Firefox news ...
Current versions of Firefox are heading for a silent update schedule from June, which means that updates will be applied in the background without the user's interaction. At present the company updates the browser every six weeks. Firefox 11 was released this week patching 12 vulnerabilities. Its intention is to update and install security patches without bothering the user. Google's Chrome already employs this method of upgrading.

I was, like HHF, a very happy FF6 user till I stupidly updated and jumped to 9....ah well.

Thanks for the rollback tips guys....will give that a spin.

On a side topic the new AVAST seems to run a lot more smoothly than the older version so AVAST users should consider an update there. The only buggeration there is when the engne updates the virus database....it tends to freeze things for a half minute or so. CCLEANER is also worth the update, and their defrag tool is well worth using as its much better than the scabby MS one.

I dunno...maybe my memory chips are just worn out.

Not lobbing brickbats but whether new versions run well or not is not just a function of the software....the computer you are running it on is a main factor on how well it runs FF.

That was one of the gripes I was making....that the geeks who program the stuff dont seem to take account of the fact that some FoxFans like me dont buy a new PC or laptop every year. I run a 5 or 6 year old Dell Inspron 6000 that has been hammered to hell as Im a very heavy user, so the bells and whistles versions since FF6 dont run that well on a very basic / relatively worn out laptop....which to me is a kick in the teeth really.

Im sick of the new version stuttering and hanging, as well as eating up the CPU runtime and memory (accordng to TaskManager FF now can take up to 80% of the CPU runtime). So Im gonna roll the version back whch is a pig as then have to reload all the tools and add ons.

Hats off to the HHAD community, cos stuff like this thread is where it really works its best.
