restaurants & alchohol

Post by clive »

Wandering around the Emporium in BKK yesterday and decided to pop into Fuji for a spot of lunch, making sure that there were no more than 5 of us of course! Time, about 2.30 in the afternoon, my simple request ' whilst I choose from the menu may I have a beer please? The reply shocked me, I travel around Thailand regularly and when I want a beer in the afternoon I visit a bar, quite often when I am hungry I will eat at the bar, my simple requests have never yet been turned down. but Fuji managed it, no more alchohol available in the Fuji in the Emporium between 14.00hrs & 17.00hrs. Now I may act a little bit immature sometimes following a bevy or two but everybody else in the world seems to think I am quite capable of downing a beer or two during 2 and 5 & not going on to cause irrepairable damage somewhere. I can see the idea with the shops, although it only sems to apply to the 7/11 stores, oh and by the way you can buy a 24 pack because that is wholesale, damn right it is, or you just buy 3 hours supply at 1.55, I can see the idea in service stations but the Thai just opened shops next to the service stations and carried on selling liberal amounts of beer and whisky. Anyone know anywhere else I should not try and eat in between 2 & 5?

clive,
I think almost all 'shopping centres' or malls will be the same as they are complying with Thai law, and I imagine would be clobbered much harder than a small family run shop in a small soi if found breaking the law. Market Village in Hua Hin is exactly the same, and there may even be a condition in the lease of the restaurants and shops in these places stipulating that they cannot sell alcohol at those times. Of course the law is an ass, but you can't blame the outlets for complying with it.

Its technically illegal to be in crowds whilst BKK is "State of Emergency".

This law has been being enforced by the foreign chains ever since the laws were written. I had the same at MK and Chester's.

I have a feeling that a call my bluff has been executed followed by a "we can't lose face" situation.

Thai restaurants in the street on view to everybody seem to be able to serve beer 24 hours per day, as do railway stations.

I have only seen the law enforced in foreign large chain outlets including those mentioned and Tesco, Carrefour, Big C and KFC.

It would be interesting to know if Villa Market, Geeun Toong and Family Mart have to obey the ruling.

This is good news for me; it gives me another excuse not to go in shopping malls!
