Great news for tourism. yea right

Post by robby hh »

Public Health Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung Thursday unveiled his plan to ban the sale of alcohol beverage on public holidays.

Chalerm said he had assigned the Disease Control Department to consider invoking the Alcohol Beverage Control Act to issue a directive to ban the sale on public holidays, such as New Year Day, Songkran holidays and religious holidays.

What a revolutionary Genius who's name will no doubt go down in history alongside the likes of Mahatma Gandhi and Che Guevara.

Back into their shells, eh?
I love the bit about "disease control". I'm definitely a pest who should be put down as quickly as possible. After all, I'm an alien and therefore - well an alien.

His plan?

Published on April 14, 2008

Alcohol sales will be banned over Songkran festivals in the future, if the road toll this year exceeds targets.

Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung will consult the public first, he says, but he's keen on prohibiting booze sales on the first and last days of the annual, traditional new-year celebration.

Alternatively, the hours alcohol can be legally sold could be tightened from the current restrictions.

The road toll for the first two days of Songkran this year reached 104 dead and 1,411 injured, according to the Road Safety Centre. However, the Narenthorn Emergency Medical Institute says the toll as at 5pm yesterday is 143 dead and many more injured.

The Road Safety Centre says Saturday saw 743 road accidents killing 59 and injuring another 854.

Understudy,
It's simply a case of some under-educated, rich, priviliged old man being shown some reigns of power.
He has to make himself look worthwhile.
As you say, he has no experience in that department (must admit I havn't looked at that, but the gits in Thai government generally havn't had).
I've had enough

Yes right, I've heard ducks fart before. In all my years in Thailand there has never been a single day when I could not buy alchohol. The only places who are forced to abide by this crap are places such as Tesco, 7/11's and some other places. If anyone can show me a Thai owned cafe that will not sell you alcohol, I'll eat my words. Just a short while ago on one of those so called alchohol free days, I tested the water by sitting down right in the center of Hua-Hin and ordering a beer - yes you guessed right, I was served with no questions asked. For the average Thai, selling you alchohol means money in his pocket and that, as we all know, means a lot more than any elected monkey.
Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact

Absolutely, when are these hypocritical politicians ever going to see that they can't stop people drinking if they want to drink. That particular politician may just be trying to stop his own offspring getting lashed and shooting people though.

Is Thailand turning Muslim now? Reminds me of that scene out of the movie 'demolition man' where someone reels of a whole list of things that are now banned ... cigarettes, alcohol, swearing, skimpy clothing, violent movies, speeding, video games, porn, rock music, spicy food, internet, having fun ...

In the UK for most of my adult life last orders was called at 2230 everybody out 2300. Then the govt relaxed that and i never heard a peep about the Hordes of foreigners flocking to the new longer opening hours.

I would also find it slightly weird that a country would hold back or not change rules for a transient bunch of people even if they are tourists.
A govt job is to do what is best for their country not foreigners.

Do i think this is a stupid idea, of course i do, but I accept that its their idea its their country.
I also think a lot of all this crap is polititions putting up umbrellas before the crap comes down and no tourists arrive because of exterior reasons anyway.
The good thing is as Takiap points out thank god for the sensible Thai people who dont take any notice of stupid rules or polititions :thumb:

Its all very well having the "its their country, upto them, don't make rules for foreigners" attitude but then they shouldn't gripe when their economy is collapsing and tourists don't come here and choose more welcoming destinations. Many choose not to holiday in Muslim countries for these exact reasons - too much oppression and everything is banned.

Can't have your cake and eat it!

This is the same ex-police captain who was interior minister last time until Samak removed him. He's also the father of the thugs who shot and killed a policeman in a nightclub some years back. He's the worst of the worst as are his sons.

However, what law like this is ever really enforced? You can still get booze anywhere except big chain stores 24 hours a day, people still use cell phones in cars all the time, and another just recently which is a joke, the details of which I can't recall.

Don't get high blood pressure over this, the Thai's don't, they just ignore it. Pete

I'm not talking about the Thais, I'm talking about the idiots that come up with these stupid policies. Thais don't gripe about anything ... unless of course their livelihood relies on the tourist trade!

Buksida, you state that this could effect Tourism but the Thai Government have already proposed their strategy to counter act this.

In fact it was you that posted the flawless plan.
