I currently live in a Moslem country that relies heavily on tourism. Ramadan has just ended, it had no effect whatsoever on the sale of alcohol to tourists, even locals had no problem if they knew where to look. A couple of years ago a governor tried to enforce a ban and he was shipped out double quick.

I always thought that the licensing laws in England were relaxed to attract more tourists, especially from the Continent where they could enjoy a drink whenever they wanted. Whether that worked or not is certainly debatable, but that was the idea. The English law changed with the blessing of most senior Police Officers. Generally, the publicans didn't like it - more hours, bigger bills, less sleep.
How much of Thailand's foreign currency input comes from tourists? I remember reading a few years ago that it went something like
Rice exports
Coconut exports
Prawn/shrimp exports
TOURISM
something like that anyway.
If Thailand makes the "guests" unhappy, then they're making a rod for their own backs.
After 10 years here and married to a Thai, I don't necessarily expect anything out of this country, but a bit of respect might go a long way, IMHO.

Yes Lomu it was supposed to attract the tourists it did not work though well not in Hammersmith & Fulham anyway and yes the police did go along with it now binge drinking is a problem

And i agree with both Lomu and Buksi there should be some show of appreciation for the 15/17 Million Baht i have braught to this country over 10+ years it hasnt happened i dont think it is gonna happen while i am breathing but i hope maybe before Buksi is being carried anti/clockwise round the Temple it might happen
I have i am afraid lost all Hope that the powerfull in this country will even think of disapaiting any of it by taking the chance. Falangs are seen as a threat to their power and they will hang on to it. I also think the poor will have to take over before any kind of change will happen here.

It did work once, because the weekend before last I went back to Nottingham for three days and I based my decision to travel on the fact that despite having to get a late flight after work on Saturday, and a train that arrived after eleven, it was no problem as the pubs would still be open.lomuamart wrote:Sarge,

It would be fair to say though that I was the only tourist in the pub at four when it closed!
