Cleaning the beach?
Thanks for all the comments to my original post. I agree with several of the posts that say this is part of a bigger economic/infrastructure problem, but I also believe that if everyone helps a little, we can improve things.
We walk the beach for about an hour every day, and carry a trash bag to pick up the worst of it. As one of the posts noted, it's worse now than we've ever seen it, and several tourists have stopped us to complain. A few things we've observed: 1) It is more Thai people than farangs. 2) You can see patterns where the trash is worst- construction sites, public access areas, and near the fishing boats. 3) It's surprising that the luxury hotels don't clean up the beach in front of their property. It's just as bad there as anywhere else.
If someone offered 20 baht for every bag of trash collected off the beach, i think a lot of the kids who are just sitting around would be glad to help. With very small donations from apartment buildings and hotels, this could be a good little business for someone. It could help the enviornment and the economy too.
We will stop by the tourist office and complain about the cowboys. I would appreciate it if others would as well.

I live in Cha Am (at the weekends/holidays, anyway). I also go for a rubbish-collecting strole every Sat/Sun morning.
Have done so for a while now, always collect a large amount.
Disagree with the 20 Baht a bag suggestion, they'll be bringing extra rubbish from god-knows-where, just to put on the beach.
Lead by example....... I often get commended for collecting rubbish, and occassionally even seen them pick up a bit themselves.
Keep up the good work EP. I know there are other farang doing the same, maybe through this thread, more will give it a go too.
Every little really does help, and it only takes 10 mins to make a small stretch look much , much better

I haven't seen the beach at Hua Hin yet; is it really that bad in high season? I like walking on the beach & if it was going to be too polluted to enjoy I might think again about my destination.
Having said that I've walked along Patong beach during high season & coped with that, & many travelers are calling Patong Pootong...

cleaning the beach
news article in hua hin today, even the Navy commander has complained about the waste in the sea, and the general state of hua Hin.
Maybe someone will eventually take notice.

Beeblebrox,
This is a thread I started last year http://www.huahinafterdark.com/forum/hu ... t6994.html.
OK, it wasn't high season, but I am a regular visitor to Hua Hin, and I've never really the beach dirty.

Winkie, as far as I'm aware, all of the deck chair operations on Cha-am beach provide bins to cater for the rubbish, every Wednesday for as long as I've known has been set aside by the council for beach cleaning.
Onlyme.
PS. I'm sick at the amount of times that I've seen Thais' throwing their shit out of the back of a pick up!

wonder if it would be possible to do some community beach clean ups. i guess i'm talking about the "expat" community first (as an example).Winkie wrote:I live in Cha Am (at the weekends/holidays, anyway). I also go for a rubbish-collecting strole every Sat/Sun morning.

perhaps it would just be a token gesture. groom just a small section of beach. the currents and beach-goers and construction sites will always deposit more trash, but it would feel good and could be organized into some kind of beach party after.
i've seen these things be successes in other places in the (western) world. . .
The beach where my house is, is a few kms north of the ain Cha Am beach.
Yes, some for the other farang get together some mornings for a few minutes communal rubbish collection.
My house is in communal gardnes with other houses and a small condo block.
Recently, at our AGM I've convinced the management team to adopt beach cleaning as part of there 'grounds maintenance'. whilst so far we've only achieived their committment for 1 morning a week, at least its a start. Will push them for daily cleaning, and ultimately every tide.
Incidentally, Ive seen that Alila Hotel, also north of Cha Am, sends a team of 20 plus people onto the beach each day, specifically for cleaning up the rubbish.

Keets, can we nominate you as VP of Organization? I would be more than happy to help tidy up the beach. I think you will get plenty of volunteers, the hardest part being the organization of it. Saturdays work best for me.

When the Tedsabaan are periodically reminded they do a reasonable job oh Hua Hin beach, Bins, Bin Lorry and sweepers - maybe they only do high season?
Apparently there is little result from complaining to the Tourist organisation in town but if you write a nice but serious letter to Bangkok TAT the results filter back down.
The thread started with comments on the Horse droppings (being polite today). A very legitimate complaint, their safety record is not too good either - I'm sure most of us have seen them careering at full gallop along the beach. But a word of caution here - if you want to complain about these guys they are very close to the MIB and seem to be untouchable.
