Hua Hin - the good bits
Hua Hin - the good bits
I have read this board for some years and noticed it is a board for complaints ... too many cars, wrong grapes in my salad, expensive taxis ... blah blah blah ...
So what are the good bits? yah I know there are already topics on this but the majority is just people bitching about stuff.
For me ...
A town you can cross in 15 minutes, it isnt Chicago, London or Tokyo.
A beach you can find a spot on - far cry from Rio.
A nightlife thats as good as you want and as bad as you can be.
More golf that you can do in two weeks.
More choice of food and resturants than you get in most cities.
For you ...?

Hi Procyon,
Good thread to start as you do get a lot of negative stuff on here and some people intent on stirring the brown stuff.
Here go's this is what i like.
Great Sea food restaurants.
Medium sized town.
Feel safe to walk around at night.
Empty beach.
Resort more aimed at couples and familys
Feels laid back i dont like the in yer face kind stuff
Great forum and information portal.
Not so many pissed up farangs making compleat fools of them selves.
There are some good activites for familys.
No no money no honey tee shirts.
Kendo.

Both times have finished my holiday in Hua Hin after going to Phuket & Samui. Is more laid back and in the end when the holiday is finished, feel like I have had a holiday, not that I need another one to recover from a 3 week hangover.
Good reasonably priced friendly bars
Eating places I have been to have been good food and very well priced. (One warning do not order Greek Salad's)
HHAD members and past and present bar owners that I have met have all been very friendly and hospitable
Must see point for all holidays, the Toilets at the Lets Sea Bar about half way down the beach.

Well, while we're on a positive run...
Sea food is great
Affordable and non piss-taking accomodation can be found
General vibe of the place is relaxing
Easy and quick to escape down the coastline if desired
Can go off adventuring outside the city limits
Low insanity levels that are hard to find in many more touristy places

In fact, having thought about it, pretty damned positive about the whole place in almost all aspects. Any gripes you hear are probably applicable to most other places aswell and are inevitable. No gripes from me on anything........
..............oh, apart from that farcical multi-roaded rail crossing that was created after the planners downed a crate of lao-kow. Don't know it's name but sure you gents/ladies do. That road that takes you west up towards the hills with nice property developements springing up everywhere.
I know this is a positve thread but used the above example to highlight the point that have never really been or stayed somewhere with so few as here.

From a Bangkok resident's point of view...
*only two hours drive from Bangkok
*lots of cheap seafood restaurants on the way up (and back)
*most of the hotels are close to the city center
*most hotels have a decent pool for the kids to splash around in
*you can park the car for two days almost anywhere and it's still there when you come back
*most hotels are within stumbling range of Bintabaht et al
*there's a decent choice of Thai and western food within walking distance of each other (this is REALLY important as my wife and her sisters like Thai food, but my son and I have more western tastes)
You get my drift...

Hua Hin, the best bits
Thank god for this thread, after all the doom and gloom on HHAD I was beginning to regret my decision to buy in Hua Hin, but hey, things don`t seem so bad after all!!

HuaHin - the good bits
Spitfires farcical railway crossing - has to be said is a nightmare but I hear plans are afoot to widen and alter it.
Otherwise its ticks all the way - food especially. Very reasonable prices and still excellent quality. Beer prices not too bad either. Variable, but hey, expats can vote with their feet and to tourists its still peanuts.
Natives still friendly.
Night Market much improved.
Drainage improved.
Can still smoke in most places.
Except Internet caffs so bye for now!

A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.
I chose Hua Hin for a base because of the following reasons:
It’s reasonably near to an international airport.
It has enough good nightlife for someone over forty, (any more would kill me!)
There is a large enough ex-pat community to be sociable.
I can buy just about anything I need there, (I hate shopping anyway.)
There are a multitude of quite beaches within an hours drive.
A large selection of good economic eating.
Basically when I’m staying in Hua Hin I spend most of my days touring the beaches further south for a nice secluded local restaurant for lunch and a lazy afternoon beer, but I can still be back in the town for a sociable evening out, which makes a very pleasant lifestyle really.

as a month a year visitor, I even love the bad bits. Even getting over the railway on Chomsin!!
but to me the best bits are:
standing on my bedroom balcony in Bo Fai and hearing nothing but the frogs and crickets
walking in the park on Hin Lek Fai and just taking in the views
the ability to make the evening as quiet or as rowdy as you want
the food (I hate Greek salad anyway)
eating pizza at Caruso and just watching the world walk by
having very spicy noodle soup and a beer for breakfast, for about a quid
having a sundowner at the Chinese temple, or at White Sands
getting the guy in the Wat car park to smile
finding a bar we've never been to, being the only farangs there and being made to feel as if we're the most important customers they've ever had
etc etc
we arrive again in a week and yes I am over-excited
