Anybody here been to Petchabun before? Any hotel reccomendations? A/C and a safe is a must, This is first port of call with all my money and needs to be safe and secure.

Im looking forward to going next year it sounds really nice, Will a decent bottle of something be a good icebreaker when im visiting my ladyfriends family/village?


I bought a bottle of Talisker 12yr old to do this last year, After carting it around for a few days i gave it away to a mate in Bang Bua Thong, Nonthaburi. It certainly fired up a few enquisitive locals!!

I did my first "meet the parents/sisters/brothers/grandparents/cousins/mayor/cow and buffalo" trip to Isaan last month. I brought red wine, assuming I would be the only one consuming it. No one in the family had tasted red wine before, and luckily I had brought a 5 Lt box. In less than a 4 hour period the 5 Lts were history and everyone in the community had sampled it.

BW, The village in called Ban chailang Lap if i heard right, Its to the east of the town/city not too far. Where is this in relation to your place?
CC, Im looking forward to it, After a short spell in Kampaeng Phet in september i want to stay in a proper thai village again. i can just imagine as soon as something better than Lhao Khao is brought out a few samplers will appear.

Please post a trip report upon your return. My wife lived on a remote farm in Petchabun during a good part of her early childhood and she keeps promising (threatening?) to take me on a trip up there but we haven't done it yet.

I'd like to hear what you think about it as a short holiday destination.

BZ, I would suggest locating the place on the online map here

Most villages have a temple, so make sure you are in the 'EN' version of the program, and that the temple and village icons are active. Then do a search with Petchabun, temple and 'lap'. You'll find where your village is. Unfortunately, it's just outside the scope of detail in Google Earth.

You can also locate the hotels in Petchabun on the same map.

Thanks for that link... always looking for a better Thailand map. It may not be quite up to date though. The village in Loei where my mother-in-law lives is not on there even though I checked villages, tourist attractions and temples (the village has two temples, one which is a major tourist attraction in the area with a giant standing golden Buddha on a bluff overlooking the Mekong).

I don't know why, but I've yet to find it on any map.

I am in wichian buri which is approx 100kms south of petchabun town and i dont recall yr particular village or town - you should be able to find several hotels in petchabun town as its gone modern now and even has a big C!

I can strongly recommend Kosit Hill Hotel! It is in the middle of the city, but still somewhat secluded. Huge hotel with a strong "colonial touch". Unique, one-of-a-kind. You can spend hours in the hotel lobby, corridors, stairs looking at the collections displayed there. Rooms perfect, professional service and hospitability, excellent breakfast, low prices. What more can you ask for?

In Nakhon Sawan we pulled into the carpark at Big C, The security Guard has a little bay 'coned off' for special customers, 20Baht for parking on the doorstep and the car being looked after

Could anyone tell me the date Songkran 2009 in Petchabun?. Ive been told it varies town to town and with limited time to visit i want to see the full glory of my first Thai festival (And also be able to use a supersoaker i plan to take with me .
