I used international signed for, A4 size jiffy envelope. It would have been about £3.50 with £33 of standard compensaton but with the contents i insured at a cost of £7.20.

I would never send anything overseas standard mail, That was £1.56 by the way. The amount of hands it will pass through to get to where i want it to be is worth paying extra.

Wow, nearly 11 quid all in all! Now I know why I get so few cards from the UK... tight gits, all of 'em.

Merry Christmas, BZ!

(Not really taking the mickey, but that just seems an awful lot of money to me, whatever was in with the card! Maybe I've been in Thailand too long... :D)

I have recently, inside of six months, sent to myself eight postcards to my street address in HH.
I have written clearly, distinctly and the address is valid.

Not one of them have arrived. Not even one. So much for HH postal services.

One sees all too seldom proper prices mentioned at HHAD board. In this (postal!) thread we
learn that proper price for a man's (big man's) suit is about. 3 500 baht.

While I agree, I'd really like to see real prices mentioned on the board. I'd also like reliable postal deliveries.

Farang,

I was not saying the Thai Postal Service is perfect. In fact if you read down the thread, I mention an instance of a parcel taking 4 months to reach its destination in Thailand.

I was simply reporting one of the good instances (this forum is very good at reporting the negative side of things, but not so good at reporting positive experiences).

I believe a total lead time of 6 days from initial order by phone to Thailand, through manufacture and despatch to delivery in the UK just 6 days later to be an exceptional service - far beyond my personal expectations.

Following my previous post I also share a PO box here which helps (they understand numbers)

Not sure how easy it is now to get one but find some mate who already has one and split the cost

Some that ignore your box no. and use your address are painful. I regularly get stuff from Computershare which asks for instructions by a certain date and the date has well gone :(

Stuff going the other way (Thailand to wherever) is usually OK as it's airmail and has the country in large letters at the bottom

Just reading Richard's post it got me thinking
has the country in large letters at the bottom
When you sent your 8 postcards, did you write the address in Thai or English? I have noticed in the past that mail to Thailand addressed in English has a much reduced chance of getting there than mail addressed in Thai.

I would guess that Postman is not the best paid job in Thailand, and applicants would not have to prove an ability to read English.

Richard, I think you may have hit the nail on the head.

The address both in Thai and in English has the same form:

123/45 SOI 67/8

so it's not the simple explanation. Thai companies use this form as well. And I seem to get all by bills, not the postcards.
Having said that, Thailand still has much better postal services than several other countries where I have lived.

I have just had a package sent from China to my home address using EMS. I tracked it all the way to the handelling department in Bangkok. I happened to be in the post office the afternoon of the package arriving in Bangkok posting xmas cards to the UK (will they get there) and I asked them how long it would take to get from Bangkok to Hua Hin as I had heard stories it could take a while. The man behind the counter said it would be here tomorrow and asked for my address. I gave him the number of the house and he finished the rest for himself, to which I was amazed, I dont get much post but he knew the exact address from the top of his head just by the number. He also asked for my telephone number so he could call me when the package arrived.
9.30am the next morning I recieved a phone call to let me know my package was here in Hua Hin and he would hold onto it till I got there.

All this was done in English and I was very impressed by the postal service this time but I have also had my share of sending things from here to other countries and vice versa by regular mail and it not getting there, but as I have no idea where it got lost here or there, theres not much i can do. I suggest everything needs a signature and if your expecting a parcel give them the heads up at the post office and they will look out for it.

I just got a letter from HH postman.

The letter was sent by registered mail from Lillestrøm, Norway on 23.10.08.

I got it today, the 22.12.08. Just two months.

Over the last two years, we have received Christmas cards sent in the first week in December, in the first two weeks of February.
I am dreading the thought of our new credit and debit cards being sent out early next year.
