Decreasing number of tourists

Just to add though - am up in Chiang Mai at the mo and there seem to be plenty of tourists around. Both backpackers and rich hotel folks. There are a lot of Americans/Canadians and Europeans here.
The climate is great at the moment. About 30 deg daytime, but cool enough at night to sleep comfortably without a fan.
The strange thing is that the Thailand map at my guesthouse, which caters for a lot of tours, doesn't even show HuaHin. I'm talking to backpackers who have never heard of it, and who's itinerary is North - Chiang Mai, then straight down South to the islands. Theres nowt for them inbetween, apart from the KhoSan Rd. Maybe the TAT needs to being doing more for HH?
A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.
I walked the beach on Saturday and was surprised to see almost every sunlounger occupied as I walked about half way to Khao Takieb. This was about 11am.
Popped into Coco 51 last night for a quick beer and it was busy - OK, groups from The Hilton etc. But there are plenty of people around from that little survey. They're all just going to different places now.

True, although I wasn't in the bar area. Have to admit though that I was wondering on Saturday whether any place would sell me a beer along the beach.sandman67 wrote:Lomu....
think the bars were busy last night because we just had two nights and days of enforced temperance
No problem. Everyone was imbibing and I don't think that those people would have been your regular bar customers at 11am anyway.
Maybe I'm wrong and everyones' become more alcoholic than me, but..........

My main drinking place in Surin, on dry days we drink out of tea mugs, its allways like having a crafty smoke behind the bike sheds and quite amusingsandman67 wrote:Lomu....

Cnn traveler reported today that tourism numbers to Thailand were down a third over same period last year so maybe that will lead to cheaper airfares and discounted hotel rooms for all visitors.I do not think this figure takes into account present disruptions as programme was probably made last week
Around 860,000 British nationals visited Thailand in 2007 i wonder what the number for 2008 is now and will be by the end of the year
I sort of hope the air fair get cheaper next year after March , but i will always come back it just the best place i been (Hua Hin that is) one of the few palces you can really relax.
I do hope the down turn does not effect all there too much

Diplomacy is the ability to tell a man to go to hell so that he looks forward to making the trip
The same night the PAD shut down the airport there was a Thai gent in that fancy white tunic the PM sometimes wears (he'd be a minister or senior bureaucrat) on the TNN news channel saying that, since so many folks get killed on the roads during public holidays, he's proposing banning the sale of alcohol at every holiday - Xmas, New Year, my birthday, etc.
Do you think he and PAD are working together to reduce the number of tourists?
cd.
