Road To Surat Thani

Post by canthai »

Hi everyone, I would like some information on driving from Hua Hin to Surat Thani. I would like to know the best and least congested route. I am from Canada and we drive on the other side of the road. I have driven in Thailand before but my wife (Thai) is a little uncomfortable with it. Any recomendations on good spots to stop and see, eat or stay along the way would be appreciated. Thanks Craig

There really is only one realistic route, which is the obvious one you'll see on the map (get on the 'bypass' and keep going for 7 or 8 hours). If you're going to Koh Samui, there are alternative ferry options well before SuratThani, but I'm not sure about the car.

If you're only going to SuratThani, I suppose my main question (without any offence intended, but I've been there... :D ) would be 'Why??'

Incidentally, the Thais, for all their faults, at least drive (usually) on the correct side of the road...

I can't help you with stops en route, as I only ever drove Samui-Bangkok-Samui, and Hua Hin was my stop-over if I needed one.

Good luck :thumb:

This is correct. It is highway 4 until the Chumporn Ranong crossroads where you carry straight on onto Highway 41 to Surat. A well signposted new road takes you off highway 41 into Surat town and on to the ferries.

If you want to have a break about half way and also get off the main road for about 30 KM then stop at Bang Saphan.

Between 155KM and 160KM south of Hua Hin turn left onto HWY 3169 and go right on into Bang Saphan Centre, the after the railway crossing turn right at the traffic signals (not usually working) and head south. After 3 KM you will see turnings to the left that take you to the beach. There are many places to eat serving both Thai and Western food. There are also a couple of places on the main road.

Check out the local guide for details:
