Shipping some shirts to the US

So my brother wants me to send him some more tailored shirts to America after buying some here on his last visit and realizing its a good deal. The tailor told me if they ship with their tailor shop address, US customs is tough and wants to collect duty/customs tax. She recommends I just send them in a package with my home address here in Hua Hin and it should be okay, not have to worry about customs pulling them for customs tax.

Anyone have experience on this matter? Specifically, anybody shipped tailored shirts to the US and what happened? Any tips? I have to declare whats in the box and the value on the form and trying to figure out best way to do this. It might be no problem but I have no idea on this matter.

use Fed Ex or UPS...postal services here can be a bit hit and miss. Theres an EMS office in town but Ive never used them.

as to the declaration

2 X shirt
Personal gift
Value nominal (apprx $10)

should do and be pretty much the truth....dont know how much you spend on shirts...im a cheapskate 99bht shirt boy

you shouldnt have any issues, as you can send gifts, and customs should not charge duty on them under a set value...in the UK I think its 150 quid??? Couriers can advise on that anyway.

Not sure about the US but as long as they do not bear fake designer logos or labels/packaging, indicating them as just purchased, then it is the same as you sending your own clothing home .Sending 500 items migt raise alarm bels however .

There is customs duty payable on textile products imported into the USA. You can try to mail them as you've mentioned above and you may get away with it. However, whether Thai mail, Fedex or similar you have to state the contents on a declaration form. No way around this if it's a parcel.

If me, I would state on the form "personal gift" and a reasonable value not ridiculously low. They will pay a few dollars on the receiving end, or Customs may just let it go with nothing. I've experienced both but I don't remember the exact % of duty payable. Good luck. Pete

Don't shoot me if I've got this wrong, but for the past year or so we've been using EMS/Priority Mail in Cha Am, and they don't ask us to put down what's in the package. We just get their box, put the addresses on it and off it goes. Delivery is usually made in less than ten days and so far no problems.

We've always used EMS to send anything to the states, from important legal documents to birthday presents. We do it directly at the Hua Hin Post Office and have never had a problem with anything getting lost or delivered late....usually takes 4 to 5 business days.
