Durian??!!

Post by Sukku »

Hello everybody,

my boy-friend and I will be in Hua Hin from the 22.March to 6.April and wonder if we might find some Durian during that time.
As we have read on the i-net Durian season starts in May but perhaps we will be lucky??

Does anybody know if there will be Durian already and where we might get some fresh ones?
Frozen Durian isn't good :(

You can usually buy all types of fruit, whether in or out of season, in the supermarkets. If it is out of season it will just be more expensive as it has come from another country, a lot(durian) comes from Malaysia. Shouldn't be a problem for you.

Hi Sukku :)
I take it that you have tried fresh Durian, how do you stand the smell??

I stayed in big hotel in Bangkok and on the back of the door was a sign, that tells you what is not allowed in the room.

Durian was top of the list (in red) followed by guns, then knives, then dogs etc. :?
Good luck with your quest. :thumb:

Hello,

well we had a fresh, whole closed durian - and it did not smell until we opened it.
After opening, the smell wasn't very strong either and we ate it in a few minutes with 4 persons.. after that we all need to burp and THAT has stunk to heaven

later we haven't found any fresh durian in Germany and bought frozen flesh of a durian.. we couldn't stand the smell after unfreezing.
i tried to eat it but the smell was awfully disgussting so we had to junk it.

I have found information on the internet, saying the bad smell only starts to get worse if the durian is opened and the flesh has air contact - the longer it is open, the worst the smell.

but i do not have any more practically experience than mentioned above :?

I have been told you can get delicious and smelly Durian in April, so you should be in luck.

There is Durian around at the moment, but it is out of season, and I am told very expensive (probably not comapred to Germany!) and not very good, not smelly and not tasty, apparently it is at about 50% of the prime, king of fruits munching Durian that comes in season.

(I have to add I think it is one of the worlds truly revolting foods, sorry)

I could never get past the smell until a friend held my nose and popped a fresh peice in my mouth ,Not too bad as it happens but I would rather have a pomelo .I have a jackfruit tree that is fairly prolific .Anyone who wants them is welcome as we don,t eat them .I think the current ones are overripe but there are more on the way .

Tesco usually have them. Well they have every time I have been in there.
The smell does take some getting used to but the taste is lovely.

You will find them in and around the market plus on the fruit stalls on the road that runs along the railway between the station and top end of the night market (Probably best quality and cheapest here).

There are different varieties - The Indonesian one is the most smelly - quite putrid, the more common Thai one is milder, still a bit whiffy though.

They are always better to eat than you think it's going to be.

Some people suggest eating Jack Fruit which has a much milder but similar smell to get accustomed to them.

You can't drink beer and eat Durian - you will deffinaetly throw up!
