That's good Randy, thanks much. From that I can look at the UBC schedule to see if on. Pete

No, it's a league. Each country plays the other once either at home or away and that's it with the leader being the winner.

LONDON (AFP) – So confident is one punter in Northern Ireland that Wales will beat England in the Six Nations in Cardiff on Saturday, he has put 20,000 pounds (29,488 dollars) on a win for the grand slam champions.
Leading British bookmakers Ladbrokes cut their odds on Wales from 2/9 to 1/5 after taking the bet.
"Confidence is very high in the valleys at the moment and punters are licking the lips about the prospect of another Welsh victory," said Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison.
"Even at such short prices as 2/9 or 1/5, wagers like this will take their toll alongside the thousands of tenners (ten pound notes) and twenties we are taking in Welsh shops."
He added: "We don't know if the punter is a Welshman living in Northern Ireland or a super confident local who thinks they're a good thing."
The bet is the biggest Ladbrokes have laid on any of the matches so far in the tournament, with the internet customer standing to win nearly 4,500 pounds, in addition to getting his stake back, should Wales triumph this weekend.
Ladbrokes have Wales, who defeated Scotland 26-13 in the first round on Sunday, at 11/10 to win the Championship again and 5/2 for a repeat grand slam.
Ireland, who beat France on the opening weekend, are 7/4 second favourites with England out to 6/1 from 7/2 despite defeating Italy.
"England flattered to deceive against Italy and we are expecting Wales to take them to the cleaners," said Hutchison. "Sadly the punters may do the same to us!"

Yes, and England were going to get trounced by the Aussies in Australia in 2003. We also wern't suppose to be very good in the last world cup but we still reached the final. Where were Australia and the All Blacks then..?

Yes, it's going to be a good one! Starts at about 0030 here Sunday morning on Star Sports but alas, the UBC schedule says "to be confirmed..." for all the live matches. That means we probably won't know until it actually starts. In the past I've tried to tune into world class events on Star only to be greeted by something like first round badminton between Bombay and Calcutta  Pete

six nations rugby

Post by Arcadian »

We were in a bar in Singapore with our sports mad Aussi daughter in law the night of the world cup semi final; lots of beers followed by chillie crab, what a great night!!
Can anyone else remember when it was the 5 Nations, a try worth 3 points and Cliff Morgan spending all afternoon kicking for touch when lineouts were ruly 50~50? Results tended to be 3~0, 6~3.

Yes. I remember well. It was 10 man rugby. Strong overweight packs, who could rumble around the pitch, stick it up the jumper, scrum half to out-half and kick to touch from anywhere. (you didnt even have to be in your own 22). I once timed the amount of time the ball was in play and it came to 22 minutes (out of 80). Nowadays its in play for about 50-55 minutes. It also used to be the 4 Nations (not called that), and when France were introduced their initial results were as bad as Italy's now. The real coup for this tournament would be to turn it into the 7 Nations, and bring in the very deserving Argentinians. Let them play out of Spain, as most (if not all) their players play in Europe already. Now that would be a tough competition, and might better prepare the Celtic nations for the Southern Hemisphere sides in the World Cup. As for England (being the 2nd best team in the world - if that is what one poster meant, because they reached the final of the last world cup, lets not fool ourselves. English rugby is not in good shape. Their form since becoming World champions was awful. Ireland beat them 4 times in a row. However they were worthy world champions, but that was 6 years ago. A long time in sport, and Rugby is not 1966 Soccer. You wont be able to brag about WorldCup 2003 in 2023 if they havnt won it again since.

For what its worth - my tips for 6 Nations 2009

France 4 wins
Ireland 4 wins
Wales 3 wins
England 3 wins
Scotland 1 win
Italy 0 wins

France will win on points difference.

However if Ireland prove me wrong and win a Grand Slam match in Cardiff, I will buy everyone in Hua Hin a drink that night. England may beat Wales this weekend, but will not beat Ireland in Croke Park. The Irish just won't allow it !!.

Happy Rugby

Why do they string this thing out in the middle and make it weekly at the beginning and end? Perhaps to heal injuries? I thought I would be seeing some matches this weekend but no to be. :( Pete

As you stated Pete I think its because a lot of them get broken and need to be glued back together. The glue needs a week to set properly...

Pete - your rugby learning curve will sharpen soon with the Dubai 7s tournament (if it's shown on UBC) - a different game altogether!
