Ever wondered what happens to your old beer bottles?

This story has poppted up in the media today...

Buddhist monks in Thailand have recycled over one million used bottles to build their temple in Khun Han.

There are 20 buildings in the complex, all of which are made of green Heineken and Chang beer bottles.

The site comprise the main temple over a lake, crematorium, prayer rooms, a hall, water tower, tourist bathrooms and several small bungalows which serve as monks' quarters.

Even the walls surrounding the temple are made from beer bottles.

just think every time you have a beer you are effectively 'Making merit' by contibuting to the Temple!

Actually, we need a good structural engineer on here to explain whether or not that temple will remain stable over the long term. My understanding is that glass really isn't completely hard and stays fluid forever, as evidenced by windows in old structures looking wavy and distorted at the bottom corners after years of being in place.

That whole place could get a bad case of the droops down the road. :shock: Pete :cheers:

Correct, glass is a fluid and over thousands of years will "run" to the lowest point.

In very strong direct sunlight, Will the air expand inside enough to break the bottle?

Clever use of waste, How much does a ton of chang bottles sell for at the recyclers?
How many tons is a million bottles?

Maybe Lomu could build his own house after a decent session on the Chang :twisted: The money saved on rent etc :D

The hovel I live in has already been constructed by Chang bottles. I've done my best to add some other great brews to it, but the foundations are fundamental :cheers:
