Not yet, but it's good for every connaisseur to partake in a bit of levity between sips! Good show and all of that, hip, hip. Pete

Here is a site for the major Thai vineyards. Don't know if a complete list, but seems to include the major players. Pete

Pete,
I've heard that the Korat winery is good. I havn't tried any as I'm a beer drinker, but I'd always put the best bottle of red in the microwave to cook it. Only joking
However, I really should try some of it.

Franzia is a perfectly acceptable drinking wine in a box at around 780 bt for 3 litres .The mont clair bin 5 at 285 bt a bottle is good too .For something a little better with dinner cudgee creek, hardys and little penguin don,t break the bank .Start on the fine wines and its going to sting compared to back home .There again I can eat a veritable feast of quality Thai food in a beautiful lakeside setting for 50bt per head. and 22 bt a beer .

:D

I've tried most of the Thai wines and imo Chateau de Loei wines are the best. Unfortunately, they are also priced on the same level with comparable imported wines even though they are made in Issan! I'm guessing that they are very good because the climate in Loei province has much cooler and longer winters than most of the rest of the country (because of altitude of the Loei plateau).

Talking of wine from Korat province, think the winery/wineries Lomuamart is refering to are in/around Khao Yai, they are all like farm resorts with an appropiate price tag attached to them(resort and wine), expensive if I remember correctly, 3000-5000 baht a night at a conservative estimate.

Think there is one at Chok Chai Farm aswell, think there is the right type of soil in these areas, which is very dark as opposed to the red coloured soil(full of iron oxide).

Agree about Chateau de Loei being good, the best is obviously a personal taste but in general Thai wine is getting better all the time.

Acadian,
1. You need to first complete appropriate documentation seeking permission from customs.
2. If granted you then need to produce an invoice showing true cost of goods upon arrival.
3. You can pay up to pay near 200% excise and duty.
4. It will end up costing you around 3 to 4 times the cost of the wine.

Just been through the exercise as we needed to bring in "12 SAMPLE" bottles from W.A.

The wine in Oz retails for around $25 a bottle. It was going to cost us around $90 a bottle to have it cleared.

I ended up telling customs to keep it and enjoy the drink . . . . . .
It's now or never.

Thanks for that Checker, the wine I had in mind is a very drinkable Tunisian red which can be bought in bulk for around 75p.
