AVG

Post by margaretcarnes »

I've had constant reminders from AVG recently about downloading the latest free 7.5 edition update. But someone has told me this is a scam, and that downloading will infect my hard drive.
Any ideas anyone please?

There was a thread about anti-virus a little while ago:
http://www.huahinafterdark.com/forum/an ... 10337.html
I think the general feeling was that the new AVG used too many resources and slowed your computer down. I'm still using the old AVG despite getting all the messages about updating last year. Like you, Mags, it's now telling me I've got until 12th April to do so. I'll wait and see what happens.
Avast seemed a good alternative and it's a free download. I'm sure other technical experts will put you straight.

Agree with the above, I stopped using AVG when I got those messages last year. Tried version 8 which ground my machine to a halt so switched to Avast and haven't had a problem with it.

Thanks guys for your quick replies. Yes, I'm getting the 12th April deadline message, and as you say will ignore it and see what happens!
Oh well - it was good while it lasted.....

Recently I have been using 'super anti spy ware' and have found it really good. It even got rid af a false error message that has been popping up on start-up recently...

IMHO Avast is probably one of the best anti virus product available and its completely free of charge - used in conjucntion with a spyware scanner such as super antispyware it will keep yr system pretty clean - the downside is that as it sits as a TSR it will slow the system down a little - small price to pay for pretty good protection

I'm using free AVG version 8.xx and I don't get any messages, it works flawlessly, and I am using it on a nine year old Pentium III PC that is only 866 GHZ. That, along with FireFox, the free Zonealarm firewall, spyware doctor, and Advanced System Care (all free versions) seem to keep my old steam driven machine running fairly well.

I've been using AVG almost for as long as I can remember and I have nothing bad to say about it. Even though it's on manual scan, it has still found a virus on three occasions on it's own accord somehow. It also found a virus on a SD memory card that was from a mate's camera.

I've had the message to update to version 8 but when I go to update it, the download doesn't seem to work. Right now I'll just wait until the current version expires.

I was using Zone alarm as well but I disabled it a few years ago as it was interfering with IP Star internet.

Bottom line is - AVG is great, in my opinion.

Yes, like Takiap I'd also tried to download version 8 when the messages first appeared, but although the download seemed to complete it hasn't installed. Which made me even more suss - especially when warned against it! So I haven't tried again.
The 12th April deadline notice has disappeared today (11th) and despite still having the AVG window showing I'm unsure what is happening.
So will access it through the desktop to investigate.
There seems to be a general concensus though that AVG slows things down to some extent. That doesn't really matter as I rarely download anything, and don't use computer games, but I wonder if AVG is more compatible with some programmes than others?

Margret, I have used AVG for a long time now as is is the easiest one I found to schedule overnight scans etc.
My version is the latest and is 8.0.238. If you cannot download the latest version. Try uninstalling what you have and then go to http://free.avg.com/ and download the latest version.
I have got emails recently to download 8.5, but that relates to a trial of their latest complete Internet security system, not just the free version.
All in all I find it most capable of doing what I want it to do, and probably one of the most user friendly for setting up to do what you want it to.

Just checked, that's the version I have and it works great. BTW, when you are installing this and any software watch for check boxes already checked that ask you if you want "news or offers from the company" or anything to that effect. Uncheck these boxes. Also watch for unwanted toolbars. If you uncheck these things you may not get the unwanted messages about upgrading to a trial or paid version. I don't get any messages like that from AVG.

Well I decided to go for it and just finished installing the free 8 point something version. Computer hasn't blown up yet. Installation obviously worked this time (yes I was careful about the tick boxes thanks) and the installation process automatically uninstalled version 7.5 - always a bonus, as I still struggle to uninstall stuff.
Have already saved some E mailed photos to file without any delays so fingers crossed....
Maybe some people do have problems with AVG depending on their system? Or of course what else they want to do like games and downloads.
Anyway, will see how it goes and will change to Avast if any problems occur.
