I'm with that, which is why I use Avast, its currently sitting in memory using about 30 megs, the other 'security suites' will chew upto a hundred.
I tried Avast some time ago and it totally chewed up all my system's resources but maybe the later versions are better or I didn't have it configured in the best way.

AVG (I have the latest free version) doesn't have any noticeable effect on my system performance in it's normal protection mode. It certainly does when It's running a system scan, which I do once a day but at night. Spyware doctor as well has a noticeable effect when it is running an active scan, which again I schedule during times when I'm not using the machine. It's normal protection mode works in the background with no hassles or performance degradation. ZoneAlarm is a great free firewall that has to learn for a few days and will give you lots of pop ups in the beginning, but after that is is just there and works great.

The one performance issue I have with both AVG and ZoneAlarm is that they cause my machine to take three or four minutes longer at startup. Other than that they work great.

Looks like I may have to change at last. This morning I got a message, after the daily update, saying that I would get no more. I'll see what happens tomorrow.
If nothing, the it's either the latest version of AVG or Avast for me.

avg

Post by redzonerocker »

it's quite a simple choice, if the avg upgrade works ok, keep it :thumb:
if it causes a slowdown or other glitches, ditch it & select another free option, theres plenty to choose from.
personally, i go with buksi on the avast choice.
my sisters pc went pear shaped because of an avg upgrade. there was a huge slowdown & crashes galore.
since the avast has been installed, no problems at all.

the a/v programs debate can be an endless one, what suits one users machine doesn't necessarily suit anothers.

There is no AV product that is far better or worse than any other, they all do the same thing. Just use what you like and what you're comfortable with.
spot on !!!!

AVG

Lomu - yes looks like decision time! As many have said now it seems the choice of AV will depend largely on your system and what you expect from it.
Theres some quite scary lists of programme use out there. My view is keep it simple, which can be difficult. I've ended up with 6 photo programmes which include some loaded by my camera software, and still struggling to sort the damn things out!
Also a free Google which landed the other day and quite honestly is neither use nor ornament to me!
But BTT - the new free 8 point odd AVG is - so far - working fine with no apparent slowing down of anything. In fact it seems much less intrusive, and probably quicker. I'm not getting those big updating notices (it might of course not be doing any updates yet.) It's also disappeared from the toolbar.
(So much for the doom and gloom from friends who predicted free AVG for only a year, then demands for payment.)
HHFarangs' experience of his (admittedly old) system slowing by 3 or 4 minutes on start up would be my worst nightmare though. Mine still starts up in no more than 30 seconds barring glitches. Which suits an impatient non techy person fine.
I guess if people are used to dial up for example a few minutes seems normal and you get used to it. So at the mo I'm with the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' brigade

Mags, I'm very impatient too, so I turn the machine on first thing in the morning and then go off to make coffee and a bagel while it slowly comes to life. Guess I shouldn't complain. In computer years, my machine is probably about the same age as I am in human years and I'm getting pretty slow to start up in the morning too! :D

Well, after years of using AVG, I've finally run into problems. .......

My PC went on the blink so got it all fixed and it's working like a dream. Unfortunately though, because it's all new, I'm having to install AVG again and after three attempts, I've given up. Each time I click download, it downloads and then right at the end I get a window which says that Windows has blocked to download because it's missing a valid certificate. That's half a bloody day wasted. BTW.....I did turn off my firewall so not sure what's causing it. Anyway, as I've never used Avast before, I'm trying to download it now as I'm typing. Pity though because I've always been with AVG.

I have a few questions to ask all those who know something about computing but I'll start a different thread shortly.

Any advice on the AVG issue would be welcome though.

Thanks
S

Ignore that message and just proceed with the install, its just Microsoft flapping about any product it doesn't recognise, AVG is perfectly safe.

If you're still having problems that can't be solved here check this out:

Thanks for the reply Buksi............

The window that pops up only gives one option and that is a button which says "Okay". When you click it, it's all over and you have to start again. Anyway, I managed to download Avast and got that installed so I'll have to see how it shapes up. I had a little hassle downloading VLC as well but I got it done in the end. Pleased with that because I really do like VLC and use it for everything.

Will be visiting the Digital Surgery soon though as I'll need to start upgrading. :thumb:

My old version of AVG is still giving me daily updates, but at the end of the process it says that I need to restart the computer to complete it properly. This has been happening over the past few days. I've never had the message before.
Are things being updated properly? I do restart and the AVG icon is in the correct colours and it says I'm fully protected. I'm just a bit thrown by the message.

Tsk you Windows users and your restarts. I can leave a computer on for weeks at a time, months even if I want, without a restart, even with a full-blown operating system upgrade. ;)

'Tsk' indeed Super T! After a month of totally unobtrusive getting on with things in the background fast hassle free life with new AVG - it's suddenly decided not to come out to play. No amount of clicking on the correction thingy makes any difference.
