America or Hemerica

Post by sandman67 »

This is an interesting news sideline from the BBC:
Ming Dynasty replica junk sinks
Princess Taiping (Courtesy Chinese Maritime Development Society)
The Princess Taiping was powered solely by wind

A replica 15th Century junk has sunk off Taiwan, one day short of completing an epic voyage to the US and back.

The Ming dynasty-style Princess Taiping was trying to prove that China's greatest admiral, Zheng He, could have reached North America 600 years ago.

After surviving several storms during its 10-month voyage, the junk broke in two and sank after it was rammed by a freighter just off Taiwan's coast.

All 11 crew members were rescued after being found adrift on the wreckage.

'Really ashamed'

"We have worked so hard for so many years, but we failed at the last minute, I'm really ashamed," said Taiwanese captain Liu Ningsheng after being rescued by the coast guard.

The crew are rescued by helicopter as the boat sinks

The 54ft-long (16.5m) Princess Taiping, powered only by cotton sails on three masts, was designed according to ancient specifications.

It set sail last June and called at several ports on the US west coast, including San Francisco, and at Honolulu, after riding out several storms.

It sank 30 miles (48km) off the island's north-eastern port of Suao, just hours shy of completing its record-breaking Pacific crossing.

Capt Liu's crew included six Americans, two Japanese, one Taiwanese and a Chinese national.

Several were treated for hypothermia or light injuries, but later released.

Some historians argue that the Chinese discovered America, citing anchors and various other Chinese artefacts found scattered on the floor of the Pacific Ocean.
Now I learned that America was possibly discovered by the Viking explorer Eric the Red, who called it Vinland.....then by Columbus (sort of) and a Genoan mapmaker bloke called Amerigio Vespusi who it is now named after....America.

Then the Irish were supposed to have found it using sea going coracles.....that one I have doubt about given a coracle is about as steerable as a brick and sod all use in heavy seas....so is it Tir Nan Og?

Thor Hyadal's lads showed it could be done in a reed boat like the Phonecians and Egyptians used......so is it Carthaginia or Raland?

However, some Chinese scholars are claiming it was they who discovered America via their great seafarer explorer Zheng He.....

Thing is I read Zheng He headed the other way and explored SE Asia, E Africa, the Middle East and India.....no mention of sailing East.......or North and East......

so is it Vinland, America or Hemerica?

If the Chinese had been there first, when the Mayflower arrived they would have been surrounded by Indians trying to sell them copy watches!

Right Norseman,

It's Thor Heyerdahl as I'm sitting here looking at my hardback copy of his book "The Ra Expeditions".

I wonder if his parents really named him 'Thor', or he assumed it later in life? Isn't Thor the Norse god of war? Pete

as Norseman can confirm its a commonish name in Norway....Ive met a couple......none of them wore horny hats and waved hammers though ;-)

Sorry about the misspelling.

The Vinland story is a laugh tho.....the tale goes Mr Red found Newfoundland after getting blown off course on the way to Greenland during a storm....all bleak and cold.

Sailed home and in a classic estate agent type selling pitch said the place was covered in grape vines, fruit trees and lovely weather.....then conned a whole bunch of explorers into going back....after all it worked with Greenland....which was distinctly un-green most of the time.....

Newfie archaeologists have yet to find the beachfront VinView Sunny Condominiums developments he was selling off plan.

PS: one thing I never understood. How did whoever "discover" America when it was already populated? Id say the Amerinds or Inuit could lay claim to that.....

I think that story, or at least the version I saw on HC or Discovery, related that Eric the Dang went on to Newfoundland, or at least they have found Viking remnants there. Not sure if the man himself ever made it there, forget exactly if they said him, or just those from his Greenland colony. Pete

Hi Sandman - that first line of your OP quote really grabbed my attention. I had immediate visions of a car boot sale, and the chance to grab some nice garden planters!

'Ming dynasty replica junk sinks'

Whatever floats your boat eh?
