Buying/Using a Jet ski

Post by Mr T »

I was wondering if anyone can offer some advice here.
I have been considering buying a jet ski, stand up style and have a couple of questions.

Is it acceptable to just pull up to a beach and use one here? Well away from any swimmers of course.
Also does anyone know anywhere that may sell or import such a thing?
I have been looking on the net a fair bit and keep drawing a blank. I am pretty sure it will involve a trip up to BKK at least but thats not a problem.

Initially, I don't see any problem with just pulling at the beach - assuming you have the correct paperwork. Maybe a bit like riding a motorbike or driving a car.
However, there may be some Thai operators who'll take offence to your being there.
Definitely don't rent the thing out because you'll get busted for working without a Work Permit.
I really don't know too much about your situation so am just trying to think about the general rules. Hopefully, other members can be more specific.

Cheers for the reply, I wouldnt be renting it out I recon that really would wind up the Thai operators. I hear it can be like a little mafia, especially around Phuket and Pattaya way.
Maybe I will head down to the beach and have a word with some of the Thai operators via the wife, still working on my Thai...

Hi Mr T

I don't know anyone here who has a licence for a jet ski.
If there were licences, they would have to have the reg. no. marked on the side of them like a boat, but I've never seen one.

As long as it's for private use, you won't have a problem.

As far as buying one is concerned, you need to go to Pattaya.

We go there a couple of times a month - if you let me know a bit more precisely exactly what you're looking for (make, engine size, new/2nd hand, etc.), we could take a look at availabilit/prices for you when we're over there next week.

Barry, do you boat over to this side or drive? Pete

Hi Barry,
I didnt think a license would be needed but its nice to hear some confirmation.
That is really good of you thanks.
There are really only a couple of stand up single person skis available.
Kawasaki SXR 800cc & Yamaha Superjet SJ 700cc.
It would be great to hear if there are any second hand ones around (only up to a couple of years old).
But might be safer to go for new. If you can get an idea of prices on these or similar new and if possible used I would be forever gratefull.

Sounds like the pllace to go, I will plan a trip over Pattaya way after my next trip offshore.

Thanks again, James.
