GIANT Gecko!!

Post by pinky »

Hi, can anyone give me some advice. We have an enormous gecko 'type' creature that has decided to spend its evenings on the back of our house. Im not joking it is about 12 inches long and is identical to a gecko in every way except that it has orange spots.
Little bit worried, dont mind the small ones but this one is huge!! Does anyone know what it is and is it poisonous, nasty etc... Also can it do any damage to the house??
If its harmless it can stay.. if not its gonna get humanely evicted to the land at the back!!
Many thanks.

That sounds like a Tokay (they make a noise like that when calling for a mate). Thai women don't like them for some reason and if you mess with them they will bite and hang on. Just let them be and they eat their weight in insects every day! :thumb:
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Heres one my girlfriends dad caught inside our hut last year. I wasn't that bothered by it but the gf didn't want it around. That should tell you something as she'd know...

we've got a couple that live in our roof....I love em

they always seem to do the To Kai Kai Kai thing when its going to rain.....so its a get the washing in alarm.

Anyway.....they look way cool hanging upside down off the wall.....my mates back home are fascinated by them when I send piccys

love the Tokai on a lead.....walking one would be a pain though....

I'm glad you've decided to let him stay Pinky.

They're really quite beautiful and totally harmless creatures, regardless of what some people think. Yeh, of course they have sticky feet - how else would they climb up the walls? If you frighten the poor things, and believe you me they're more frightened of us than we are of them, then they'll obviously try and protect themselves. We have loads of them around our new house and they do a pretty good job of eating anything that flies near them.

If they do the tookay noise seven times it's good luck!

We also have quite a lot of water (canals and ponds) around, so we have another possibly scary, but again harmless, visitor. The monitor lizard. I saw one today about 6ft long crossing the road. It was nice to see that all the motorbikes and cars stopped to let it cross. I don't know whether it was out of respect for the creature or some old wives tale of 10 yrs bad luck if you run over its tail/win the lottery if you swerve round it - whatever, it didn't get squashed... :)

We had one in the bedroom last year.

How does one go about taking them outside. Surely no one would pick them up.

Luckily we were going out that night so we left the window open (upstairs) and an outside light on and he went for a walk.
