We used to live down Sukhumvit, and decided one day to visit this infamous wet market. Never again... It was pretty scary. Some dodgy looking characters and rough looking women.
I was on a bus once that stopped at the traffic lights next to the market. Gazing idly towards the market I saw a woman being manhandled by some obviously angry other women, and tied (with that really strong cheap plastic string) to a sack barrow. They then started to wheel her somewhere.... It's one of those snap-shots that stays in your mind, and left me wondering what her crime was, and, more importantly, what did they do with her.

Baa Baa: OK, it's not so much the market as the area itself. We were advised by our lovely Thai mentors to be extremely careful going down there in daylight, and to not even think about going to that area after dark. It's the slum area of Bangkok, and, as such, possibly attracts undesirables. It's not the kind of place where you complain about the cost of tomatoes...

Funny you should mention that. We actually lived half-way down Suk.22 - our lovely Thai mentors have a shop there and we always visit them when we're in Bangkok.

My Thai g/f shopped Klongtoey market every week for 2 years and never reported any problems. I went with her a couple of times with only the one fishy incident, when we first met.
Looking for something for supper she pointed to a large snapper and said "Ok?". "No" I said confidently, "Fish have to have white eyes. These all have brown eyes and are old and dead. They look like they've been dead about 5 days. Please don't buy me dead fish".
I don't know how she managed to keep a straight face but she did. The buggers had obviously seen this dumb farang approach and decided to play 'possum'. No sooner were the words out of my mouth than they all started flipping like crazy and my credibility was shot to pieces. I would have begged for a market trader to shoot me.
