Computers for children, charities and good causes in Hua Hin

Post by buksida »

This is a follow on from the Orphanage thread really and just me throwing a few thoughts out.

So I was fiddling around in the office putting together all of the spare computer parts I have lying around and realised that I could actually build another operational machine.

So the idea is this:

We ask people to donate old computer components; monitors, hard disks, cases, graphics cards, motherboards, memory, CD drives, keyboards ... anything that came out of a computer. We have a central drop point (or two) where they can leave stuff and sign a book saying what they've left.

An inventory can be posted here of what hardware we have and what we need, small cash donations maybe able to cover the cost of parts that are missing (monitors will probably be the hardest things to get).

Then we collect whats there and start building. Once we can cobble together a computer we'll install the software, virus protection and some educational stuff/games etc etc. Once we have an operational machine we donate it to the orphanage or similar school/charity so the kids there have a computer to use and start again.

It costs nothing but a little time from anyone who wants to be involved, its good for the environment as it recycles e-waste, its good for education and kids at the local schools without the budgets to buy new machines.

Anyone interested in working on this please reply here (or by PM) so we can setup a meeting and get the ball rolling.

Not smart enough to build computers, and being Bangkok-based mcuh fo th etime, do not have much available time in HH (actaully I'm in Cha Am at the weekends).

But I have at leat 2 Pcs (almost working), 2-3 Monitors (working), plus printers, many keyboards/mice etc...

If you able to get this off the ground, I will be very happy to deliver these items (probably have similar in my office too)

Thanks for the positive replies Winkie and Richard, sadly though it looks like the project will not be viable with such a little overall response.

I would do most of the building/installing myself, just really need someone to liaise with the schools/orphanage and deliver the machines. And of course we'd need enough hardware donated to make it viable.

Maybe some of the companies and hotels around town could be contacted to donate stuff - they must have loads of spares.

I also have some old PCs (and working monitors) in the office.

Being based in BKK most of the time, I'm afraid that I cannot do more than provide the computers - I would think around 4 PCs, Monitors, Printers in total. Some fully functioning.

We have some odd bits of computer equipment lying around which we would happily donate if it's any good.

We'd also be prepared to act as a drop-off point and take care of some liaison and delivery work.

I'm a shite computer technician though!!

Our first computer was shipped down to Pranburi this weekend. It took a while to get together (mostly due to procrastination on my part) but we ended up with a Pentium IV 1.8, 512MB RAM, and a 40GB hard disk with a Sony screen and an Epson printer.

Here is the lab and building process...

I'd like to thank the following members for contributing parts and their time to the project:

Winkie
lomuamart
barrys
JD
Terry

We are now starting on the second one so if anybody wants to contribute working spares please drop them at the Hua Hin Ham & Bacon shop on soi 41.

If you have any items that require power adapters please supply them also (else they're pretty much useless!). Also anything older that 4-5 years is generally not workable as the hardware is not powerful enough to run today's software.

We are in need of the following:

Monitors
Graphics cards
Thai keyboards
Speakers (with adapters)

I know you did not show much interest before but we still have a printer/photocopier/scanner we do not need and a laptop.

If you are interested we can deliver them to Ham and Bacon later this week.

hi buksida,
we will come to huahin this weekend and i have some parts laying around here. CPU + MB (P5), RAM 1MB, CD drive, USB sticks, cables etc, however I don't have housing, power supply, screen. These items also would explode my suitcase.

If you are still interested to build more PCs please let me know and I will carry them to Thailand.

I really would like to help to assemble however we will stay in HH a few days only :-(
